Elderly and frail TWICE as likely to wait more than 24 hours in A&E in England than in Scotland

From the Guardian today:

More than 150,000 patients had to wait a day in A&E before getting a hospital bed last year, according to new data.

Freedom of information data compiled by the Liberal Democrats from 73 hospital trusts – about half the total – found that the number of patients forced to wait more than 24 hours in A&E before a bed could be found for them has increased by tenfold since 2019. The majority of those forced to wait were elderly or frail, with two-thirds of the patients over the age of 65.

From STV, less than a month ago, in March 2024:

Public Health Scotland statistics obtained by Scottish Labour through freedom of information (FOI) revealed 7,367 patients were in an emergency department for more than 24 hours before being discharged, admitted or transferred in 2023.

However, Public Health Scotland states some attendances recorded as more than 24 hours will be due to erroneous records that suggest longer waits than actually occurred.

We’ll ignore those spoilsports at PHS trying to undermine STV’s big headline and accept the 7 367 figure.

Regulars at TuS have no doubt done the next bit already.

However, all things being equal and with 10 times the population, the figure for NHS England should be around 74 000 but was, in fact TWICE that at 150 000.

It’s always nice when Labour or Lib Dem researchers do our work for us with FoI requests in Scotland and England.

  1. We are both in our middle 80s and I have had reason to call 999 for my husband on 3 separate occasions last year. Each time was life threatening and my man’s life was saved first by the amazing paramedics and then by the wonderful staff in critical care at Ninewells. We couldn’t have hoped for better or faster treatment. If it wasn’t for the NHS he would have died the first time because we certainly could not afford to pay for that kind of fantastic service.

  2. Question : How much each year do FOI requests cost from Unionist politicians desperately attempting ( at public expense ) to find something/anything to use to besmirch the SG ?

  3. I doubt few are under any illusions as to Scotland’s rude health with it’s NHS compared to England, even in England.

The role of Makar was reintroduced to Scotland after the turn of the millennium, they have been Edwin Morgan (2004-2010), Liz Lochhead (2011-2016), Jackie Kay (2016-2021) and Kathleen Jamie (2021–present).

There was need for reintroduction of the Makar-Upperer, they never went away…

  4. The ConDems did not increase funding for the NHS. £125Billion. Not increased since 2015. More elderly people needing treatment. The Tories are spending £1090Billion a year. The ConDem supported Austerity. LibDems responsible for Tory cuts. Betrayed the students and everyone else.

The Tories spent £270Billion over two years funding Covid. Much of it was wasted on fraudulent PPE schemes and loans, without proper scrutiny.
