No more a mean city as Glasgow’s murder rate plummets 80% under SNP

From a Freedom of Information request, by a disappointed opposition MSP I’m guessing, there were only 7 homicide victims in Glasgow City last year (2022/2023), down from 34 in the last year of the Labour Government in Scotland (2006/2007), a 79.4% drop in only 16 years.

A more meaningful comparison, based on the five-year average is 36.2 for the last 5 years of Labour rule down to 10 for the last five years, 71.8% down.

Can the SNP claim credit for this? I’ve no doubt it’s more complex than that but imagine it was the other way round and homicide had surged under the SNP? Fewer police officers? Soft SNP laws? You know.

  1. TBH one of the most ‘puzzling’ aspects of the debate on Knife crime in England, where the deaths of young people has failed to be addressed by politicians in England, in respect to them seeking and implementing a real solution to this…..is that whenever this is ever discussed/debated on UK TV programmes …that there is absolutely no recognition or credit given to the successful initiative adopted by Scotland that has seen a significant fall in deaths by Knife crime….or indeed why there is no suggestion that England should follow (adopt) Scotland’s initiative in this which has seen positive results.

Of course I say tis “puzzling” but I fear the reality is, in the current political climate of never acknowledging or praising Scotland for anything, it is more a tactical omission….as apparently according to our media here (and opposition parties) the formula is always that Scotland MUST follow England in all that they do….even the things proven to be a disaster and a failure.

Politics over people….I mean if they insist we are all ONE UK….then surely if ONE part within that UK has adopted a system which has seen positive and successful results then why can’t other parts of that ‘ONE’ UK not also follow suit….if that is they really wanted to address this tragic situation.

Meanwhile Mother’s and Father’s are left to weep and mourn the loss of a child.

  2. Yes the SNP can claim credit for that substantial drop in homicide rates in what used to be known as the crime capital of Europe. I’ve said before, as kids we were warned not to go near Glasgow, because it was too dangerous especially for us girls. That was weird though because I never felt safe as a young woman in NE England, luckily I was a fast runner, so escaped violent criminal men on one occasion, and the cat calling from men in the street was a daily occurrence.

Let’s not forget the legacy of unionists rule at WM and at Holyrood and indeed in councils across Scotland, crime and drugs very high, terrible schemes, no, ghettos for what used to be known as thelower classes. Add to that very low life expectancy and Scotland was akin no doubt to a poor African country even though, looking at films about the huge huge industrial arena in Scotland,
Scotland should have been a thriving rich country. It could surely be said it was a colony, and still is though with Scotland being allowed to mitigate English government austerity, albeit on a reduced budget, set by the er, country next door!

The Scottish government should remind people about what the London political powerhouse did to Scotland to keep the people poor, to make sure Scotland was kept poor, and to keep taking Scotland’s massive resources and revenues, where the population was used to keep the lights on in London and the SE of England very well off indeed. The difference between Scotland being used to line the pockets of corporations, and the rich in England, and other industrial parts of England, is that Scotland was portrayed as a crime ridden wasteland, full of lazy Jocks.

My neighbour was a teacher in Ayrshire, he’s almost 90 now, but he told me it was impossible to get the young folk to study because they were disenfranchised, they had ‘no opportunities’ and no future, why go to school and why do homework. Let’s also remember that many Scots have had to leave their own country to find work and a life worth having, either going to England, or abroad.

Scotland was last on England’s government list and an afterthought re building houses post ww2, as with many other social necessities.
You just have to watch films about Scotland at the National library of Scotland website, to see just how duped Scotland was and is, the union is a massive scam, it always was right from the handful of greedy rogues, signing away Scotland for a some gold for themselves. Ironic the English government takes revenues from Scotland’s high quality gold being extracted by an Australian company, at Tyndrum, must be worth a fortune eh. Shame. Scotland is still so scammed by the colonial maters next door. Tragic.

    1. I meant colonial masters, of course. The films at national library are really worth a look, some not available to watch for free, but there’s hundreds, and on many subjects and different genres.

  3. It is not so much that SNP have created this outcome, rather than they didn’t meddle in police operational management – Even if PS have felt the budgetary pinch of late, they know full well where that originates despite the wealth of disinformation.

It is quite remarkable how influential Scotland’s police, fire, ambulance etc emergency services have been in changing methodologies in other countries, not that the average BBC viewer would have been aware of it unless looking elsewhere.

As to your ” Freedom of Information request ” observation, spot on…….

  4. O/T

Sir Jeffrey Donaldson has been charged with rape and other historical sexual offences and has resigned as Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) leader.

A 57-year-old woman has also been charged with aiding and abetting in connection with the alleged offences.

They were both arrested on Thursday morning by PSNI detectives and were questioned before being charged on Thursday night….he, Donaldson, is to appear at Newry Magistrates court on 24 April this year….

Sorry is that the same DUP that they, the Tory party , gave (Bribed) 1 Billion pounds to for a ‘confidence & supply’ agreement for them, the DUP, to support the Tory government on key votes….in return NI would get that money….10 DUP MP’s more clout at WM and financial gain for NI than the SNP who had far more MP’s at WM.

Boris Johnson, in 2021 , appointed Donaldson as the UK’s trade envoy to Cameroon….in addition to his role as the trade envoy to Egypt….he was also appointed , in the 2016 Queen’s Birthday honours, a Knight Bachelor for ‘political’ services…..well that figures as he, Johnson, was a clown whose choice of ministers left much to be desired as far as him picking any who were either competent and proficient people ……..

Wow…Dross & his colleagues at Holyrood & also HQ Tories have the audacity to slate the SNP and yet look who they choose to get into bed with….and also who they choose to fund them via donors….as in the one who made racist remark against a black opposition MP to the Tories…who he said should be “shot”…..oh but Ferries, SNP Police investigation, Hate crime Bill etc etc

I think the SNP should take NO advice, scorn, slating, ridicule, lessons in morality or talking down to via any in the Tory party….as the list of their scandals , both directly and via association, has proven they are totally unfit for anything but to be as far away from politics and power as is possible…..

    1. Adding on from previous comment on Jeffrey Donaldson….

Stormont announced in January 2024 to be restored.

In Feb this year it was reported :

Devolved government in Northern Ireland has been restored after a 24-month hiatus, following a decision by the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP)”.

Now….two months after January announcement of restoration of NI parliament….

March 2024…this scandal emerges concerning Jeffery Donaldson DUP leader.

Spidey senses wonder if timing is everything.

Donaldson , in January this year (or rather long before) must have known this scandal was coming out re him…..as he is to appear in court in April this year.

So….imagine if the DUP had not still agreed to Stormont being restored and then this news came (scandal) out re Donaldson….how bad would that have been for the DUP in NI with the majority of people there ?

Just sayin….tis a bit of a coincidence that they, the DUP via Donaldson, agreed to restore government in NI in January of this year…then two months later, in March 2024, this news (scandal) breaks about Donaldson.

I mean the people in NI would not have been too amused about this indeed I suspect many would have been incensed to have suffered for so long without an active government and then a scandal emerges concerning one of those (DUP leader) who caused the government to collapse as an active government/parliament in NI…..

      A conspiracy theory ?

Perhaps but then that depends on whether you believe in ‘coincidences’ or not…to me the timing is suspect …….Karma is a bitch and sometimes ‘The House of cards’ does eventually collapse on those whose behaviour and beliefs are solely based on such a weak dogmatic obsession that sees them make decisions for the wrong reasons…..and thus decisions and actions that ultimately harm the people they are supposed to represent as their political representatives …….and too the wider community/population.

If we are talking ‘Division’ then religion is way up there….as is uber Unionist allegiance….so before any Pro UK MP who sits at WM uses the prefix ‘Divisive’ before the word Independence referendum…perhaps they should first look at some on their side who are experts at ‘divisive’ forms of opinions, actions and beliefs…..just sayin.

  5. I remember when Labour controlled the councils in Scotland the politicians were commonly seen in the local pubs , usually drunk or well on the way , they went about as if they were the mafia kingpins .Young people were smoking and drinking under age everywhere , every city and town , yes it still happens but not on the scale it did back then when the Labour party ran things. I have grown up seeing the changes and i have no doubt whatsoever that the SNP policies over the years are what turned thongs around .I was recently at the C C country music festival in Glasgow and one of the artists a certain Mr Paisley said on stage that he had been talking to whispering bob harris DJ radio 2 who now does the country music show on radio 2 and he had told Mr Paisley who had been proud of his name being linked to Glasgow , that Glasgow is the murder capital of europe ! I was taken aback that this oaf Harris had said that to someone and taken aback that Mr Paisley had actually repeated it on stage , he was a great singer never been to Scotland before so i forgive him but Harris now 77 what an oaf .The english love to call Scottish cities the capital of this or that bad thing , they used to call Dundee the capital of europe for single parents , it was as much a lie as Glasgow ever being the capital of europe for murders, yes Dundee had single parents a young population as it still does but the number of single parents was never more than the average as Glasgows murder rate was never more than the average .The thing is these idiotic people who make these claims do not compare like with like , you have to make comparisons with cities that are similar in size , have similar numbers of young people and similar economic measures.P.S. Oh how ive missed your articles this last few days .
