Why does only Scotland need to hear of national grid problems it does not actually have?

Included in Reporting Scotland’s very short insert in BBC Breakfast and the main story on the BBC Scotland website (below), ‘The National Grid’ and its need for massive investment to make sure it can provide the flow of electricity to ‘homes and businesses’, makes no mention of the key fact that Scotland does not ‘need’ this at all; the rest of the UK does.

Scotland is currently transferring 1.69TWh of electricity per month to England, more than 20TWh in 2023 and on some days (above graph) pushing 30TWh.

https://news.duke-energy.com/releases/duke-energy-customers-surpass-1-terawatt-of-energy-savings-through-my-home-energy-report-program

1TWh would sell globally for about $120 000 per hour, so on that basis Scotland’s 20TWh could generate $2.8m every hour or $1bn every day or $365 billion per year. So much for that £1bn SNP black hole in the budget?

For BBC England despite their desperate need for the above transfer, it’s not apparently a story they need to hear:

BBC UK as a whole? Just:

Wales, Northern Ireland, Channel Isles? Not a mention.

Norfolk, where some cables will come in?

It’s a different report apparently from the ‘England’ website which doesn’t currently feature it and is largely about pylon protests.

I repeat, why does only Scotland need to hear of national grid problems it does not actually have?

  1. I’d hazard a guess that we’re the only ones being told about it in order to gently sow the seed in our minds that the cost of necessary upgrades will be all ours. So we should expect to be drip fed more and more about this over the next few months.

After all, why would England have a cash cow and not milk it dry whilst they can – before the truth about the effects of Scottish independence on them hit them hard?

  2. Englands propaganda war on Scotland in full flow , this BBC report is telling people in Scotland that they will have to pay more for their electricity to meet the cost of the national grid upgrade that is needed , England using their other favoured names of britain or uk , firmly believe that resources in Scotland belong to England so they are just taking what they rightly believe to be theirs , they then they sell it back to us in Scotland at a higher price than customers pay in England they do this with our oil our gas our electricity our whisky and many other things then they claim the reason for this is that distribution to Scotland is more expensive .Keep the people distracted with lies while you pilfer behind their back. Why dont SNP take photos of the massive works going on around Scotland to show everyone just how BIG this extraction of Scotland electricity actually is ? you would think it a no brainer to plaster photos of it everywhere .

    1. Terence, the S.N.P, or anyone else who wants an Independent Scotland could take as many photos as they like of the good things being done in our country, but exactly who would publish them? Sure, the Independence supporting websites such as this one, but who else? The M.S.M? No chance.

  3. England is the Black Hole of Europe, sucking in energy from surrounding countries.Without access to other countries’ resources,it could not survive.

Scotland has the potential to supply England with huge amounts of energy but the politicians in London have problems with the optics that would create.

England having to admit it is reliant on Scotland for anything.

    1. Yes but did you notice the plans for sub-sea route from north Scotland to Tories then direct to south England? Colonialism at its worst

      1. I thought the HVDC cables from effectively Drax to Torness were already in, the northern leg to Fraserburgh (?) was only waiting on the Contractor ??

The irony of this ‘too little to late’ approach and London v Scotland politics is it still won’t be enough – A report I’d read over a year ago on wind gennies (when the usual suspects were pushing nuclear), stated that they’d need to install a new wind genny every week if they were to reach targets or a new nuke station every year, and upgrade the entire grid to cope.

The Tories have screwed their own electorate for the sake of dogma…

  5. The ” 60bn upgrade” article has changed title to ” Miles of new pylons needed for electricity upgrade “….

The ” National Grid will ‘carefully consider’ pylon plan ” article attributed to Norfolk is about Lincolnshire…

Investment in the grid has been put off by successive governments over many decades, as with other utilities, the politicians hoped to flog off the problem.

Consumption of power in the south of England has been the highest per 10k population in the UK for some time, for water it is still the highest in all of Europe despite rapidly running out of sources.

There is a limit on what power may be sold from France etc., so it was inevitable they (HMG) would have to do something…

I wouldn’t go so far to say Scotland doesn’t need grid upgrades, but you are correct to say the BIG problem is in England and Mis-Reporting Scotland will be avoiding that reveal like the plague….

    1. The National Grid is privately owned and the shareholders are rewarded with dividends every year. Why then is it the bill payer who has to pay for upgrades to the infrastructure every single time?

I’m sick of these privatised utilities ripping off their customers and the general public.

  6. Tell me why the people of our rural communities, who have campaigned so hard, should be inconvenienced by these massive structures when they get no benefit from them?

  7. The ‘National Grid’ ie, the England controlled privatised for profit ‘grid’, is being upgraded, slowly, in England. The reason it needs extending/upgrading is to cater for more renewables like wind energy, in England. There is likely absolutley no intention to upgrade the grid in Scotland, which is desperately needed to cater for Scotland’s vast and expanding renewables capacity. Why would the BritNat state want their colony to succeed in renewables, that would pave the way for a sucessful system after independence. The present EngGov controlled energy system is more akin to sabotage or sanctioning.

Scotland is England’s cash cow and has been for a long long time, mostly providing benefits to the south and SE of England, it’s tragic, for Scotland.

It’s a massive scam, and yes the SNP and the Scottish Greens should be creating a massive stink about this at WM and at Holyrood. Lefalets through every door, about various matters, but energy is a BIG one and most folk are completely ignorant of the facts, they need to know. Looks like we are getting dodgy (green?) EngGov ‘plan’ for ‘freeports’ though! Another scam.
