How Scottish Labour would have dragged Scotland into the UK’s unaffordable housing nightmare

From the ONS in July 2023, the average cost of a house in Scotland was 5.29 times the average household income. In Labour Wales, it was 6.38 times and in England, a shocking 8.44 times.

Note how the Scottish trend [bottom] was climbing to follow that of the rUK then turned around in 2008? What could have caused that? More council-house building and affordable building under the SNP.

  1. It’s a meaningless graph if you can’t be bothered to seperate London and the rest of England.

This completely justifies the Scottish government reducing the housing buget by £300MM because that is the correct decision because there is too much housing available in Scotland because the SNP built so many houses.

    1. I’ve heard it all now – SNPBad for building too many houses!!

Would you like him to list the London suburbs separately too, as there are many suburbs which are far cheaper than others?

And then separate Edinburgh from the rest of Scotland as there is an equally hefty price  difference there too?

Perhaps you simply don’t understand the meaning of the term ‘average cost’…

    2. Scotland like much of the UK has a majority of its housing that is of the tenement type or flats built with materials with little insulation .A massive housing programme such as that which commenced after WWII is urgently needed. There should be a limit imposed on the building of flats so that all those who want a garden can have a garden there should also be a minimum percentage of new build homes that are bungalows , for the aged and infirm. Its a simple imposition for a government but it does involve government taking control of land reform in a way that prioritises quality homes for people above farm land , rhere should also be a limit imposed on the amount of land a person can own so that we put an end to huge estates, anyone not wanting to sell parts of their huge estates should see compulsory purchase imposed , no exceptions .

Regarding the reasons for the trend, IMHO the additional dip around 2016 was the SNP Scottish Government stopping Right to Buy sales.
