How little Labour did for the social housing market when in power in Scotland compared to the SNP

“This is not the first time Shelter has mounted a campaign of deliberately context-free misinformation against the Scottish Government”

It is also amazing how in a GE year that the volume is being ramped up….against the Scottish government by certain organisations ……a surreptitious disguise that could be then assumed as another ‘Friends of Labour’ ….and thus (another)’Enemy of the SNP’ …..another critic (to join the many pro UK ranks)…….

Given the media’s current #SNPBAD and then also their #GiveLabourAnotherChance badly cloaked and very much partisan political marketing within Scotland….to shore up more support for labour and less support for the SNP then ‘every little bit helps’ in promoting a message from a charity that veers uncomfortable close to a political rather than a social message in that the charity Head is declaring the leader of that party, currently in government in Scotland, as in their FM, is “gaslighting the country”….a tad strong as a message to reflect a social problem as seems somewhat very personal and political as a attack…..more subjective than objective.

Homelessness is a serious social problem with poverty being one of the most significant root causes…..and in their UK we are seeing stagnant wages, high cost of food prices , crackdown on benefits and too the political demonization of those who are in receipt of benefits indeed many problems can be sourced via another government outwith Scotland……seems strange then that a Charity should then target a devolved government and not instead the central source….as in the one that subjects more people to real despair, dejection, poverty, alienation, poor mental & physical health, deadly consequences via the infamous and cruel Tory austerity policy that resulted in an excess of over 300,000 deaths…..and thus results in many more homeless individuals..….indeed via Thatcher’s reign there was 1.5 million council houses that were sold off by 1990 and by 1995 it was 2.1 million which as a result of her Tory policy via ‘Right to Buy’ gained the UK Treasury £28 Billion….and resulted in a much reduced stock of social housing…Thatcher also did not let councils use the money from these sales to build more social housing….

I note that Kezia Dugdale is the Chair of Shelter Scotland…….and I recall how little Labour did for the social housing market when in power in Scotland compared to the SNP….

Sourced from The Ferrett:

“From 2000-01 to 2006-07 Scottish Labour delivered 28,988 homes. In the period since the SNP assumed power, 52,558 homes have been delivered. This works out as an average of 4,141 houses delivered per year under the Labour administration. Under the SNP, there has been 4,778 delivered on average each year”…..”Richard Leonard, when Labour leader in Scotland, had stated that 61,000 homes were built under the Labour government” ( Ferret Fact Service could not find any evidence of the 61,000 homes built under the Labour government, with a much lower figure according to official figures)

We witness a Wheesht for Labour & a Wheesht for Tories……with a media in Scotland seeking out and also very willing (too willing) to receive and thus promote the disgruntled representation from various organisations who seem determined to undermine and criticise the Scottish government in a thinly disguised social message verging on outright political messaging……against one party….who after all are not a party who run an independent country thus they , as a government, do not have all of the powers and the money to do the very things currently that certain (most) critical organisations demand that they do…..yes I think we all do know who it is who is really trying to gaslight the country…..and I also know why and for whom it is seemingly being done to benefit most…..as in politically in Scotland !

  1. Labour elite will never be ‘homeless’ – they have the guarantee of a place in the House of Lords , just as long as they continue to keep the hoi polloi in their place .

  2. it should be noted that during the period when Labour and LibDems were in power in Scotland, Labour was in power in Westminster. Despite their huge majorities Blair and Brown had only a small impact on social housing building. They did facilitate and underwrite the housing stock transfer in Scotland which was an impetus to housing associations, by writing off their debt. However, because of their reluctance to anger the large property businesses they did not support social housing building to the extent that that was really needed ….. but there were wars in Iraq, Afghanistan, etc to finance.

The Hapless Brown was certainly not going to help an SNP minority government in Scotland and the Tories and LibDems from 2010 were friends of the propertied interests, so, only nugatory efforts on social housing. In such circumstances the SG has done well to exceed, albeit by a fairly low percentage of a low number, the annual rate of construction by Labour/LibDems.

  3. It’s also worth noting that there will be those who consider the criticising of a member (Head) of a charity as most unedifying while completely ignoring what prompted this criticism. (backlash)….

However if the person associated as the Head of a charity chooses to abuse their position and makes what seems to clearly be a ‘political statement’, which could easily as a political statement, have been one that we would normally associate as coming from a politician in opposition to the SNP. Then surely they, irrespective of who they are and who they represent, cannot then expect to be exempt from any backlash, criticism or indeed a challenge to their misjudged wording in them declaring our “FM was gaslighting the country”…..

One of the benefits we have on blogs such as this is that we are not constrained by the same narrow diplomatic options that confines the type of response that both prohibits and restricts the FM and indeed the SNP as a party to criticise others like say for example, a charity , where the Head of a charity has chosen to publicly criticise them, as in the SNP leader & FM, politically………while knowing full well the FM is then limited to what he can say by way of a response and also how he can respond to this criticism based on who made it…..e.g. the Head of a Homeless Charity…..

We thankfully have the advantage and option in being able to say it as we see it as we are not politicians thus not restricted in having to mind our P’s and Q’s when we voice our opinions…..and if we feel (or know) that someone is going beyond what is acceptable in the language they use…..indeed seems to be, in their choice of words, an opponent to the party in government rather than one who seeks solutions and aid for the charity that they represent …..why then should we feel limited or reluctant in challenging them in what they say if we feel they have crossed a line…….we are after all citizens of this country (Scotland) and not, as I stated above, politicians and so we have ‘freedom of speech’ and we will use it if and when we see fit……even if what we say is then framed by certain snooze papers as us being defined as ‘Nasty Nats attack a charity boss’ while they themselves, the snooze paper, are guilty of a succession of attacks upon anyone and everyone that does not comply with right wing Tory ideology that they as a snooze paper are so desperate to promote and uphold…..

I think we can and will defend those within politics that we support and vote for as a political party…. just as those who actively seek to constantly attack them and who obviously oppose them politically are given many public platforms to air their eternal grievances against them, the SNP, as a party…..be it media, politicians or individuals from various so called non politically affiliated ‘independent’ organisations ……

So as for criticism…..if they can’t take it back as in what they dish out….then perhaps they should refrain from using controversial language in their statements and instead work with the government in finding solutions and understanding the limits our government has as a devolved government……then they may find a public more supportive of their particular charity as opposed to seeing it as yet another collaborator in the #SNPBAD parcel of rogues…..I am all for supporting anyone who is homeless and will give my support to any charity who seeks to help them as I do actually have a social conscience……but not a charity who seeks to deviate into party politics….that for me is huge NO NO….and too a red flag (not a Labour one….as that does not exist now does it….LOL)
