Exclusively repetitive on a ferry story from the Herald

I’m saying nothing about knobs but from the Herald today:

Nationalised Ferguson Marine have denied a breach of the ferry fiasco agreement after cutting the contracted size of the two lifeline ferries by 300 passengers.

The Herald can confirm that a redesign of the two ferries, as a result of safety concerns, will cut its passenger carrying capacity below that specified when the contract was signed in October, 2015.

The Herald did this same story last year but, now, on a quiet Sunday, shock exclusive, ‘one ferry user’ group official has contacted the Herald:

The answer is the same as it was last October:

The Ardrossan-Brodick crossing carried a total of nearly 700 000 passengers last year.

There are 16 crossings almost every day, all year long, giving a total of around 5 800 per year.

So, the average sailing takes around 120 passengers.

So, a safety cut from 1 000 to 700 is a problem?

I think not. The Herald is the problem.

Who can’t believe the safety reduction?

  1. Would this “one ferry user group official” live on S.Uist by any chance, and what the hell has any compensation between contractor and client to do with him ?

No surprise whatever to see deranged-seaman Williams make an exclusive https://archive.ph/Zw0Qs out of this twaddle, and give McColl another free pass, after all it wasn’t him who signed the Contract, or so he claimed at one point. Yet you’ve got to wade through a lot of crap to stumble across the new safety rules having been introduced 2 years after McColl did/didn’t sign the Contract, then down near the bottom, this –

“Mr Tydeman said on Friday: “The MCA gave approval for the carrying capacity of both ferries to be reduced to 929, to accommodate the necessary adjustments to escape routes and additional staircases. CMAL and the Scottish Government subsequently requested that we provide higher quality, less dense seating arrangements for 852 passengers. The contracts are being amended to reflect these latest client requirements, and there is no breach of contract.” ”

So a reduction of 71 passenger because of safety mods and a further 77 for comfier seating, oh woe is we…. Fiasco ferries from Hysterical Herald is by far the greater tragedy….

  2. The passenger safety design changes resulted in a reduction of 148 passengers per ship.

MV Glen Sannox can carry 852.

This Greenock Telegraph article (16 Dec 2023) by Gordon McCracken gives an excellent account of what Ferguson Marine’s Chief Executive, David Tydeman, told MSPs on the Net Zero, Energy & Transport Committee reasons for making the changes.
