In my long time in Higher Education and among my family and friends, I’ve never heard a young woman express concern about trans women (former men) or opposition to the Scottish government’s proposed gender recognition reforms.
These trans women are remembered as gentle, sensitive and more than any other group in our society, the most brutally abused. In police recording, no doubt a massive understating of the phenomenon, they suffer physical assaults far more often, and verbal assaults, by the day. The media, of course, neglect this in favour of the single trans woman, a butcher who abuses a young woman or the rapist, as a man, but now trans, seeking shelter in a woman’s prison. On the diminishingly rare days when the similarly rare trans woman offends, thousands of women have been sexually abused, physically assaulted, controlled and coerced by all-too-straight men.
By contrast I know several older lesbian women who have been enraged by the same proposed reforms. They are all intelligent and courageous women who have fought, continue to fight, hard and long, often suffering appalling abuse, for their human rights. They have my greatest admiration for that struggle.
There is the greatest of ironies then that some of these women are the strongest of critics of of the Scottish Government’s proposed gender reforms. As I said before, intelligent people but clearly panicked by the media amplification of deviance, a classic moral panic just like the one, only a short time ago, when gay men were accused of being paedophiles as they began to adopt children.
Wider society sees now that gay men are not a risk to children but at the time intelligent people were panicked into opposing their right to adopt.
That moral panic is now in the bin along with others such as the notion that Heavy Metal music makes kids kill their parents or the Bob Geldof panic over girls magazines corrupting his daughter Fifi Trixie Belle!
The Trans rapist in women’s toilets moral panic will, in due course, end up in the same place and 50 years from now, History and Modern Studies students will wonder that it could have happened in the most educated country in Europe.

No statistics on any attacks in toilets. There is more likely to be an accident with the toilet seat or other equipment.
There have been mixed changing rooms in swimming pool etc for years. Absolutely no problems. It helps women and families to swim with no separate changing rooms. There is video cameras and security. Checking who goes in and out. Often card admission.
Women who cohabit, the majority, do not have equal rights. They have to put in a claim within a year. It can cost £thousands. There is little legal aid, which has to be paid back in any case. Women have to stay in unsafe, abusive situations to keep a roof over their head. There is legal aid in England. This affects many women.

Is only a ‘moral panic’ because a large amount of money was injected into it to make it such as a tool to attack the SG and SNP. .
Finding out where the money comes from would be a worthy task.

Whereas I agree with your reflection on the trans issues, where I disagree is that this is natural progress – There are powers in play with a lot of money to spend in preventing the natural course of public opinion taking hold – Think ‘incontinent pigeons’, Brexit, ‘sunny uplands’, even Gaza – Think what ordinary people would consider normal were it not for so many financial interests seeing to stoke gender/religious division and confrontation as diversion to the rip-off culture in plain sight..
I was reminded of this recently by the outcry over 30p Anderson and Crue Ellen Braverman over Islamophobia – Why kick this off now ? The answer is simple enough really, the anti-semitic gambit didn’t work, let’s throw a religious/difference grenade and divert attention…
Scots have become intimately acquainted with propaganda wars via media manipulation, in England they are increasingly ‘copping on’….
eg – The latest diversion from HMS James Cook is ” Hundreds to be rehomed in Aberdeen over RAAC fears ” https://archive.ph/qHCJx and almost certain an advance perception to be perpetuated in advance of a damning report for England – That’s how you roll when you want a gong to accompany that extra special suit you craved… Journalism is so passé…..
