Scottish Government funding enables Scottish company to test ground-breaking new giant gravity battery

From the Independent today:

An abandoned mine in Finland is set to be transformed into a giant battery to store renewable energy during periods of excess production.

The Pyhäsalmi Mine, roughly 450 kilometres north of Helsinki, is Europe’s deepest zinc and copper mine and holds the potential to store up to 2 MW of energy within its 1,400-metre-deep shafts.

The disused mine will be fitted with a gravity battery, which uses excess energy from renewable sources like solar and wind in order to lift a heavy weight. During periods of low production, the weight is released and used to power a turbine as it drops.

The gravity battery system has been developed by Scottish firm Gravitricity, which plans to use the Finnish mine as a full-scale prototype to demonstrate the technology.

  1. This in Scotland.

The £1.5-2bn Coire Glas pumped storage, which we are developing in the Scottish Highlands, and would take excess energy on the grid and use it to pump water up a hill into the reservoir, where it could be stored before being released to power the grid when wind output is low and demand is high.

Keir Starmer blames Tory ‘recklessness’ for Labour slashing green investment pledge when he announced yesterday that Labour would now be cutting the scale of the green prosperity plan…..(even before elected Labour are already blaming the Tories for their, Labour’s, inability to make any real “change” or indeed for the public to see any “Fresh start” with them as the potential next new UK government)

That’s the same Keir Starmer that automatically also blames the Tory UK government for all of the Labour Welsh government’s woes…..yet somehow the same Keir Starmer, and his party colleagues, give absolutely no quarter (as in they refuse to admit) to the fact that the SNP Scottish government, in respect to these same constraints and cuts to their budget, suffer the same consequences as both Labour HQ (if elected as the next UK government) and also the Welsh government’s many failings via that SAME Tory UK government.

Is that what some people in Scotland see as being a logical, fair and a credible position for both Labour and Keir Starmer to take ?

Curious then that I had a letter signed by both Starmer & Sarwar recently where it stated that “No more empty promises from two failing governments, but a Labour government delivering on the promise of Scotland’s potential”” yet with this latest U-Turn by Labour on what has turned out to be yet another “empty promise” by them….tis now clearly they who are NOT “delivering” on what they formerly stated they would deliver to us……which shows us that they, as the next UK government, are seeking to follow the same path as the Tories have followed…..austerity and lies….and tis they who are not going to “Deliver” on what has turned out to be their “empty promises” made by THEM.

I think that Starmer’s “Missions” are for him ones that he now sees as being impossible to deliver given their, Labour’s, now ultra cautious approach where they are now very much rolling back on some of these “Missions” and “Pledges”…..so why then did we all have to be subjected to such a public promotion of these same “Missions” and “Pledges”…..though it seems that the “pledges” he is making to both bankers and businesses will survive…..which may account for his dumping of many of the “pledges” he has made to the “workers” as in the letter I received from both him and Sarwar it states that “We have changed the Labour party so that it is back on the side of working people” ah but not the ones that were on strike though….as Starmer told his shadow ministers not to join picket lines ……and also how will his pledges to the “Few” (wealthy) still being “delivered” by the Labour party as the next UK government then result in Labour being seen as being “back on the side of working people” ?

I think someone needs to get clarity (prior to next GE) on what exactly is going to “Change” with Labour in power at WM because so far I can only see them as being the same as the Tories at WM, as in offering more to the “Few” and less to the “Many”, in them “holding the door wide open” for more privatisation in our NHS and also ensuring that bankers and business owners thrive with no cap on banker’s bonuses and no increases in corporation tax for large businesses….. so it seems it will be with Labour in charge that the ‘little man’ (workers) are the ones who will pay more and thus still suffer as they are now suffering under the Tories….Scotland you have been warned !

  4. Wow….first we had Iceland boss, Richard Walker, defecting from the Tories to Labour (formerly he was going to stand as candidate for the Tory party at the next GE)…..NOW we have London property Tycoon Nick Candy (former Tory donor) stating that “.he’d back a change of government to Labour”…..

Recently Nick and his wife Holly Valance attended the recent Liz Truss ‘PopCon’ launch event as she and her husband aligned with the Tory right of the Conservative party……where she was most vocal in her criticism of the “Lefty woke”….which her husband obviously does not see as being the current New New Labour party under keir Starmer………

Once again this is a reminder of why the Labour party are NOT ones who will be the party for the working people (the many) but instead are those that the wealthy now see as a party in government who will ensure that the “Few”(the wealthy) keep, indeed increase, their wealth……all of the signs are there…..we just need more people in Scotland to cut through all of the cr*p that BBC Reporting Scotland (and other media) are dishing out in support of the Labour party and against the SNP……it really is time everyone wakes up to the reality of UK politics and the parties who support it as a flawed and failed state that does not work for us in Scotland !
