Oz Government-owned ferries fiasco – exploding Chinese engines and taking-off in heavy swells

Sydney Morning Herald

Four Emerald class ferries, owned by the Government of New South Wales, with Chinese engines, serve the Sydney Manly area in Australia.

Two are currently laid up.

In 2022, the Sydney Morning Herald reported:

Captains of the new Manly ferries have been warned not to sail directly into waves near the entrance to Sydney Harbour in heavy swells in case their vessels become airborne, a leaked internal memo has revealed.

The advice was to masters of the second generation Emerald-class ferries, which are at the centre of a fierce debate over whether they can handle large swells as well as the larger Freshwater vessels they are designed to replace on the Manly-Circular Quay route.

Today we read in the Daily Telegraph (Oz):

Basically exploded’: Chinese-made ferry engines ripped out. The engines of Sydney’s troubled Emerald ferry fleet will be ripped out after years of embarrassing breakdowns repeatedly forced the vessels out of service.

The Governments of New South Wales and of Australia have not been asked to comment because as they would insist: ‘It’s not our bloody bizness mite!

  1. There’s an article in the Herald today but I can’t read it all because of the paywall. What I can read are the comments and they aren’t very complimentary either to CalMac or the SG, as usual. It’s about CalMac wanting to pull out of Ardrossan because of safety issues.
