As it surges across UK, youth homelessness falls steadily under SNP

The Guardian today has

There has been a dramatic rise in the number of homeless young people in the UK since Christmas, charities have warned.

The New Horizon Youth Centre in London said a record number of young people had asked it for help in the first week of January, while the charity Akt, which supports homeless LGBTQ+ young people, said it had seen more referrals than it would expect in a month. Roundabout in Sheffield and YMCA Trinity, which operates in Cambridgeshire and Suffolk, also reported increases.

Research by the charity Centrepoint estimated that 135,800 young people approached their council as homeless in 2022-23 and Shelter said last month it believed an extra 40,000 people of all ages would be homeless at Christmas. But there is alarm at the rise in numbers since then.

There is only one reference to Scotland, in the Guardian report:

Kate Polson, chief executive of the Scottish youth homelessness charity Rock Trust, said: “Young people are doubly disadvantaged as they are more likely to be in insecure, low paid work and are less likely to have savings and references and we need to address this if we are to end youth homelessness.”

No mention of an increase?

So, the facts in Scotland?

See above.

  1. The 2022/2023 level is up 4% on the previous year but critically down from the pre-pandemic years.
  2. Youth homelessness under the SNP has plummeted 60%!

Remember, this was achieved against a background of Tory austerity.

  1. There are enough homes in Scotland. Some need renovation up to standard. Homelessness is caused by many social factors that need addressed. In most cases only temporary. It gets sorted out in Scotland, Scottish Gov building or renovation 6,000 houses a year.

  2. Forgive me if I am being dense. While the number of homeless in this category has fallen significantly, and this is something to be hugely celebrated, doesn’t the chart indicate that there was a 4% rise in Scotland in the recent Christmas/Hogmanay period? Your headline suggests that it has fallen.

  3. Regarding homelessness in general.

There are other statistics which do not get reported.

    Homelessness in Scotland: 2022-23

    From the section ‘Outomes’

    https://www.gov.scot/publications/homelessness-in-scotland-2022-23/pages/the-extent-of-homelessness-in-scotland/

“What are the outcomes for homeless households?

Of the 25,265 unintentionally homelessness cases that closed in 2022-23 (where contact was maintained and the outcome was known), 83% (20,860) secured settled accommodation.

Settled accommodation is defined as a local authority tenancy, a tenancy with a registered social landlord or a private rented tenancy.”
