Labour MP claims ‘UK’ has 50% of Europe’s tidal energy – will he be mocked for dodgy statistics

Mick Whitely MP (Lab)

Readers may remember Andrew Neil in the Express mocking a claim in a National headline which had mistakenly left out the word ‘stream’ from ‘Scotland has more tidal power capacity than the rest of the world combined’

There was a bit of a pile-on, as expected.

I clarified the claim here:

Yesterday in the House of Commons, Mick Whitely (Lab) claimed:

The UK, more than any other country in the world, is uniquely positioned to harness the power of its tides. Ten per cent of the world’s tidal resources, and half of Europe’s, are found in Britain.

Tidal Range Energy Generation – Parliamentary record – PolicyMogul

There’s no mention of Scotland in the speech. nor is there any mention of the word ‘stream.’

What percentage of the UK’s tide power does Mick think lies in England [the Severn estuary perhaps?]?

10%?

  1. Perhaps we shouldn’t take the mick out of Mick for “are found in Britain”, at least as an English MP he has recognised the significance and potential of tidal generation and put it in Hansard, whilst others are still flogging the dead horse of nuclear to the Scots in ‘Darlington’ by way of ‘Dundee’…

There is much hay being made by nuclear fans over ‘baseload’ only being satisfactorily addressed by nuclear, with inference of an endless source of energy which can be ramped up and down at will, a deliberate lie – Yet consider what baseload actually means – The minimum energy production which can balance the basic demand when everything else goes “tits up”.

Imagine thousands of wind generators which can be incrementally brought on/off line at the press of a button, or a computer managing it in microseconds – Well you don’t need to, because that is exactly what we have now – We can match demand on command, but the real PROBLEM is nuclear etc., as you can’t simply command them off.

So back to the tidal streams point, more famously known as the EU funded Orkney testing facility, where the biggest array ever is under test – That finally pressed HMG to relent and progress the interconnect and upgrades to the grid which Orcadians have been screaming for over many decades when the energy required was going the other way.

Some wazzock such as Disabled Seaman Bowie will be along in a minute to ask “What will we do when the wind stops and the tides stop and the sun no longer shines” to which those with the Ouija Board should reply “You’re dead, we ain’t”

  3. The amount of potential renewable energy in Scotland is pretty much as the Labour MP states. This has been established for several decades by such as Jim MacDonald who is now Chancellor of Strathclyde University.

Starmer’s much vaunted ‘British Energy’ policy (insofar as it exists) is, like North Sea oil and gas in the 1970s, Scotland’s renewable energy policy. However, as Labour did in the 1970s and hid the data on oil and gas, Starmer is hiding knowledge of Scottish renewables from the wider public. He and the Labour Party are British/English nationalists and Scotland, in their warped view, is a region of Britain/England. So, this Labour MP, who has made a true statement and is speaking honestly as a true Brit, is unaware that he has admitted that what independence supporters have been saying about renewables is true. However, the media will not publicise this very widely and will continue with the Trumpian lie Andrew Neil put about. As far as the media are concerned Neil’s version is an ‘alternative truth’.

  4. Scotland is in surplus in fuel and energy. 25%. Nearer the source yet pays a higher cost because of Westminster policies. Total mismanagement of the Oil & Gas sector. Nuclear mismanagement. Paying £Billions in decommissioning.

Scotland refused funding for CCS. Coal at Longannet in Fife. More coal could be used. Gas at Peterhead. CCS could cut emissions. Scotland has the facilities, the technology and the knowledge.

Westminsters wasteful, mismanaged policies. Negatively affecting Scotland and the Scottish economy. Brexit etc losing £Billions that could be better spent.
