What do an American and an English woman actually know about Scottish education? Pisa all!

The folk of Kelso look puzzled and well they might.

Question Time last night, particularly on Education, when we saw the SNP representative, Angela Constance subjected to quickfire attack and constant interruption from both sides, the English host, Fiona Bruce, and the American right-wing activist, Kate Andrews, was a disgracefully uninformed experience.

…compared to England.

Disgracefully uninformed?

Only politicians and media presenters make use of Pisa data. No credible researcher in education will use them other than to point to their lack of value in developing educational policy. See: OECD and Pisa tests are damaging education worldwide – academics : https://www.theguardian.com/education/2014/may/06/oecd-pisa-tests-damaging-education-academics

The results for England are not reliable due to a very small sample responding and the strong tendency for weak schools to pull out distorting the sample in favour of better-performing schools. See: PISA 2022: Rise in maths, but warning over inflated results https://schoolsweek.co.uk/pisa-2022-rise-in-maths-but-warning-over-inflated-results/

The Scottish sample, almost as big as that for England despite having only a tenth of the school population meets the Pisa requirements. See: PISA 2022 Results (Volume I) The State of Learning and Equity in Education: https://www.oecd-ilibrary.org/education/pisa-2022-results-volume-i_53f23881-en

Pisa is only one measure of success in education.

Just one, but a big one, telling you that the system is overall far better than that, for example, in the US or England. 1. Last night if it was not for the cost I would have smashed my TV regarding the way Angela Constance was treated and why is it that right wing yank is always on our TV spouting how great we would be after Brexit and wants to have private NHS maybe shares in private health companies,Fiona Bruce a waste of space

  2. I didn’t watch it because I didn’t want my remaining teeth ground into dust. There is, however, a pretty decent email in The National, p21, which I can’t find online to share. It’s from a retired schoolteacher, Frances McKie, and it raises some pretty interesting points.

  3. The very fact Pisa is being discussed at all by a QT panel, let alone ‘compared to England’, speaks volumes for the corruption of media in the UK.

The vast majority of the public have no clue what Pisa is for, how it works, or how it can be manipulated, and couldn’t care less either, yet are expected to hold an opinion on it because the media fed by the BBC in Scotland has been promoting it as ‘a matter of concern’ for weeks.

  4. Fiona Bruce is an ultra right activist she is constantly allowed by BBC to make false allegations and unfounded comments but we already know this , people who go on the programme just go in the hope that they will have five minutes of fame being seen on tv and possibly even asked a question. Its all the same type of people on the programme angry ill informed angry brexiteers who are mad as hell that brexit didn’t turn out to be what they hoped it would be .
