Whooping cough vaccination level safe at nearly 97% in Scotland

From the Guardian today:

Whooping cough might sound like a disease of the Victorian era, but according to new data from public health bodies, it is on the rise in the UK [sic]. Looking at 2023 until late November, data from the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has revealed there were 1,141 suspected cases in England and Wales, compared with 450 for the same period of 2022 and 454 for that period in 2021 – about a 250% increase.

Why is whooping cough increasing?

Experts say it could be a hangover from restrictions during the Covid pandemic.

“Social distancing and lockdown measures imposed across the UK during the Covid-19 pandemic had a significant impact on the spread of infections, including whooping cough,” said Dr Gayatri Amirthalingam, a consultant epidemiologist at UKHSA.

Finn agreed, noting the restrictions meant fewer whooping cough infections and hence a smaller number of people with immunity. “And that means that when an infection comes, it gets more opportunities to spread,” he said.

Strangely missing from the above explanation, this from September 2023:

At 24 months, coverage in England for the ‘6-in-1’ vaccine [which covers pertussis or whooping cough] remained at 92.9%,

The target to limit spread is 95%.

The figure in Scotland for the same vaccine dose, in June 2023, was 96.6%, up from 96.3% in the previous quarter.

In the last year, BBC Scotland’s coverage of this topic is stable at 0%.

The bacteria that cause whooping cough spread easily from person to person through the air. When a person who has whooping cough sneezes or coughs, they can release small particles with the bacteria in them. Other people then breathe in the bacteria.

    1. If BBC Scotland reports this it will either report the England Wales data as ‘U.K.’ or it will describe the rise from 96.3% vaccination rate to 96.6% as ‘little or no improvement in Scotland vaccination rate’
