The UK’s imperial mentality

In today’s conflict-ridden world, an advantage of an independent Scotland would be the ability to control its foreign policy. As part of the failing UK, not only is Scotland out of the Single Market, but it’s part of an expansionist, war-mongering NATO, is forced to pay for and keep the UK’s nuclear arsenal on its soil, and is contributing to the UK’s funding of the Ukraine and Gaza conflicts.

The UK’s imperial mentality spawned this disastrous situation. The first rule of empire is to divide and conquer because you assume your neighbour is your enemy. Scotland knows this mentality well, having fought defensive wars against England for centuries.

The British Empire was created through conquest and occupation, and the trillions it plundered from its overseas colonies fuelled its economic development. The Empire is gone and with it the easy access to resources. But colonisation is a hard habit to break – it’s an addiction. Westminster won’t let go of Scotland, its last colony, because it’s dependent on Scottish resources to prop up the weak UK economy.

An independent Scotland would follow a different route, that of economic development through cooperation with its neighbours, including England. It wouldn’t squander money on wars that enrich the global arms industry and destroy the economic wellbeing of everyone else, but would trade with its neighbours and invest in its own people.

The toxic cycle of conflict will only end when the Scottish People understand that they have the sovereign power to end the union and take back their nation.

  1. The fact is that, despite the desperate claims by the present Westminster establishment, the UK is not one nation and certainly not one country.
The political culture in England is driven by the need to continue it’s perceived importance in global affairs,in other words hanging on to imperialistic delusions.
We Scots only ever bought into this as a means of economic advancement and now that has gone, serves no purpose for us.
Brexit has brought this issue into sharp focus and will definitely have an impact on future Scots’ thinking as far as constitutional arrangements are concerned.

  2. The UK is England is Great Britain is England !

The old World War II movies have it mostly correct . When the Germans are discussing the War it is the English who are the enemy and it is England that is to be invaded ; when the ”British” leaders/military are discussing the war it is England that is under attack and the plucky English who are fighting against the enemy .

  3. Not sure how nuclear weapons and Ukraine conflict are linked… Ukraine was invaded by Russia (in an attempt to expand the Russian empire) led by its dictator, Putin. Ukraine deserves all our wishes and support, including weapons, in order to prevent the Russian expansionism to succeed.

    1. Not exactly, Anon. Jens Stoltenberg, NATO chief, admitted that the Ukraine war is about NATO enlargement. For years, Russia told the US that expanding NATO to include Ukraine was the brightest of red lines and must not be crossed. In its arrogance, the US didn’t listen. Since 1992, NATO has added 12 member states, effectively encircling Russia. Conduct a thought experiment – what would the US reaction be is Russia had added Canada and Mexico to its military alliance? NATO expansion is no different. Russia has no imperial aims, unlike the US which is trying to control the whole world – how’s that going, by the way? Another thing to consider. The US maintains over 800 active military bases around the world. Russia has 18 and China has 1. Who is the real aggressor here? The tragedy is that Ukraine has been sacrificed on the altar of US imperial arrogance. The days for US hegemony are numbered.
