Hospital ‘Highest Alert’ over ‘extreme pressures’ does not require Labour Government explanation

Morriston Hospital

From BBC Wales this morning:

More than 80 people are waiting for beds at a hospital which has declared the highest alert level. Morriston Hospital in Swansea said it was under “extreme pressure” in its emergency and unscheduled care services.

The hospital said the number of “acutely unwell” emergency patients waiting for beds was “extremely high”.

People have been urged to avoid going to the A&E department unless they are seriously ill or badly injured. Swansea Bay health board said a business continuity incident – the highest level of alert – had been declared.

There is no mention in this BBC Wales report of the Labour Government in Wales or of the Welsh Labour Health Secretary nor is any opposition politician platformed to attack them.

In sharp contrast, on 31 October 23, BBC Scotland had Scots NHS doctors: Rise in patients waiting 24 hours in A&E ‘shocking‘ by Lisa Summers & Georgina Hayes and had 2 references to Michael Matheson, Health secretary and 4 to the Scottish Government’s role, apparently more important than that of the health boards. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-67242402

Only in Scotland.

  1. I notice the BBC article does not mention how Glasgow, along with five other local authorities in Scotland, transferred all of its council housing stock to housing associations in 2003.

    https://www.wheatley-group.com/media/news/newsfolder/tenants-celebrate-20-years-since-glasgow-housing-stock-transfer

“The formal transfer of Glasgow City Council’s housing stock on 7 March 2003 took place after 58% of tenants who took part in a ballot voted in favour of the move.

UK Chancellor Gordon Brown had offered to cancel Glasgow’s crippling housing debt of more than £900 million if tenants voted for transfer.

Since 2003, GHA, and its successor Wheatley Homes Glasgow, has spent more than £1.5 billion improving homes across the city.”

    Continues

“In 2019, a report from the Fraser of Allander Institute revealed GHA’s work to improve homes boosted the Scottish economy by £2 billion and supported 2425 full-time jobs per year.”

  2. … and 58 NHS Trust Maternity Units in England ( with others being investigated ) have been condemned as ”inadequate” after investigation .
However , no English Government Health Minister has been blamed by the Labour Party … only a matter of time before Baillie tries to taint Scotland with this scandal !

  3. The BBC Scotland article could have mentioned this announcement from three weeks ago –

    https://www.insidehousing.co.uk/news/large-scottish-council-commits-to-7500-new-affordable-homes-over-five-years-83859

“Councillors in Glasgow have approved a £527m strategic housing investment plan (SHIP) for the city, which will deliver 7,500 affordable homes through 185 development projects between 2024-25 and 2028-29.

Around 80% of the new homes built through the SHIP will be for social rent, with 18.5% for mid-market rent.”

  4. As this website has firmly established the Labour movement is ingrained in the mindset of the BBC staff certainly in Scotland as well as other medium outlets across the UK to the extent that with no other feasible political alternative to the Tories they do not want any adverse news that will derail Labour’s political aspirations next year.

Typically BBC used the death of ‘A. Darling’ to sing his praises?? when in judgement he was asleep at the wheel in the financial crash of 2008.

All that aside having watching (or should I say endured) FM’s Q’s today was less than impressed by the feable response by Ms Robison to Starwars Q about the NHS. The SNP Gov really need to waken up to these attacks from SLabour as I fear quoting more money to tackle waiting times etc cuts little ice with viewers anymore. To be fair the NHS waiting list looks horrendous and they are in real danger of losing ground to Slabour at the worst possible time if they are looking to force the Independence debate next year. Was in not the case that NHS Wales was said to be ‘not fit for purpose’ ??? …..me thinks that Salmond would have torn Labour to bits on this occasion.

    1. I don’t see why quoting more money being invested in the Scottish NHS would be viewed as a negative by ‘viewers’. What the SNP do need to make sure to do is to point out how Labour run Wales’ NHS is in such chaos, and remind people how when Labour were in power at Holyrood, they privatised cleaning services leading to hospital acquired infections leading to people dying. If Labour UK were at the helm at Holyrood now it does not bear thinking about just how much much chaotic our Scottish NHS would be, given their past record of neglect in investing in anything useful or positive in Scotland during their ten years at the helm. They did however send £billions back to Westminster saying nothing to spend it on in Scotland, and plunged Scotland into £billions upon £billions of debt with their PFI scheme (scam)
and that debt is still crippling some councils in Scotland. All so that they could hand contracts to their pals no doubt, to build not fit for purpose schools and hospitals, which of course the SNP has had to spend a heck of a lot of money on improving, extending and making safe many of those buildings. The Labour administration at Holyrood planned to close down the Western general hospital in Edinburgh, a majorly important research hospital, thankfully saved and now extended by the SNP. Without it and without the SNP, the capital city of Scotland would have been left with one small PFI built hospital on the outskirts of the city, with a heating system which was dysfunctional as soon as it was built, and which in no way would have been adequate for the population of the city and surrounding area.

Labour must never be allowed at the helm in Scotland, they’d reverse and wreck everything that the SNP has done to improve and invest in services, infrastructure, and in mitigating horrendous EngGov cuts to our economy and the most vulnerable people.
Labour’s legacy in Scotland is a litany of neglect in investment of services and crucial infrastructure, wasting £billions on vanity projects, and a massive two finger gesture to the people of Scotland. No thanks!
