Today, the Guardian has:
Sepsis, or blood poisoning, is a potentially fatal condition triggered when the body reacts to an infection by attacking its own tissues and vital organs. It leads to an estimated 48,000 deaths a year in Britain.
https://www.theguardian.com/society/2023/nov/23/poor-people-much-more-likely-die-sepsis-study
This somewhat dated figure (there is no reliable update) is based on the English data just increased pro rata for the other 3 nations.
I can’t find up-to-date accurate Scottish data for a bit of whitabootery but I can find this:
While deaths caused by sepsis have fallen by 21% since 2012, thanks in part to the work of the Scottish Patient Safety Programme, it is still vital that people are aware of this potentially fatal condition. https://www.gov.scot/news/raising-awareness-of-sepsis/
What’s the Scottish Patient Safety Programme and how good is it?
In January 2022:
The Scottish Patient Safety Programme (SPSP), introduced by the SNP Scottish Government in 2007, has been praised by a leading European expert on patient safety.
In Westminster’s Health Committee, Dr Pelle Gustafson, CMO at Swedish Patient Insurer, responded with “Scotland”, when he was asked which country he would hold at the very top pillar with regards to patient safety.Dr Gustfason said: “If you take all preventative work in regard to patient safety, I would say Scotland, I am personally very impressed with Scotland. I think in Scotland you have a long tradition of working, you have a development in the right direction and you also have a system which is fairly equal all over the place. You have improvement activities going on. So I am very impressed by Scotland”.https://mobile.twitter.com/DrGregorSmith/status/1481211002301685760
Does the above context matter to the BBC?
Our journalism will be well sourced, based on sound evidence, and thoroughly tested. It will rely on fact rather than opinion, and be set in context.

Introduced by the SNP Government in 2007, which I’m sure was led by Alex Salmond, yet we get a photo of Nicola Sturgeon.

I remember seeing a recording of the Health and Social Care Select Committee hearing when this took place. From memory the Chair, none other than Jeremy Hunt, said they had tried (unsuccessfully) to attract “the guy” who led Scotland’s Patient Safety Programme. Absolute $hit of course, but they cant help trying a wee bit of appropriation just to prove they (Brirtain/England) would actually have been global leaders in Infection control had it not been for Scotland.
