Thanks to BBC reporting, an islander blames CalMac for a failed local council ferry

In the Herald today, the above letter ends with the breakdown of the Corran ferry, owned and run by Highland Council being blamed on CalMac.

How could that happen?

Well, in Corran ferry: The five-minute crossing that opens up the world on 18 May 2023, BBC Scotland, only in 12th of 13 paragraphs, tell readers:

Mary Ann accuses Highland Council of lacking emergency planning and says businesses, including those involved in tourism, are suffering because of the longer journey times and reputational damage to the area.

Wait, say any of the readers getting to the end: ‘What’s this got to do with Highland Council? Aren’t all the ferries run badly by CalMac and the SNP?

It’s wee insights like this that reveal media effects.

  1. People of a particular political leaning just can’t stand the idea of publicly owned services.
Taking that to it’s logical conclusion,it would be up to the Island inhabitants to fund their ferry service.
The Tory idea of “Why should I pay for your health needs?” could be equally applied to “Why should I pay for your Ferry requirements?”
Fortunately, most Scots realise the need to act communally if we are to preserve society, especially in our more remote areas.

  2. It’s yet another moan-fest in the insidious game to break up Calmac, reminiscent of the Poison Pennington et al campaigns.

The author’s dismay over what MAY happen in September next year opens to a spleen venting exercise on Calmac, yet it is his “abject failures and pricings” which is telling as none are exampled, nor is comparison drawn.
As you’ve exampled here time and again, Calmac’s “abject failures” pale to insignificance compared to other ferry operations – For sure Calmac has had operational problems, no fleet can avoid them, not even the Royal Navy, but having backup vessels gives them options.

In the perfect world of ‘James Bishop’, a different operator would serve Lewis and maintain a backup vessel on 24/7 standby in case of a breakdown and keep prices low… 🙄

  3. Sorry for going off topic but why has BBC Scotland News and STV News not reported on this story? 👇

They should be quizzing Scotland’s opposition parties and its hospitality leaders on Sir Patrick Vallance’s evidence yesterday at the UK Covid Inquiry about Rishi Sunak’s ‘Eat Out to Help Out’ which was UK-wide, Monday to Wednesday, from 3rd August 2020 to 31 August 2020.
