Submarine Shambles! ‘Saved moments before sinking’ or just ‘suffered malfunction?’

MOD: File photo of a Vanguard class nuclear submarine

Today, the National has:

Royal Navy nuclear submarine saved moments before sinking. With the depth gauge failing, the UK’s nuclear deterrent started sinking towards its crush depth, which would have led to chaos and an emergency mission to recover the sub and 140 members of crew.

but for BBC Scotland, it was only:

Nuclear-armed submarine suffered malfunction. A Royal Navy nuclear submarine suffered a “concerning” malfunction while diving, the BBC has been told. The incident on board the unnamed Vanguard class submarine, which carries the UK’s trident nuclear missiles, happened more than a year ago while it was preparing to go out on patrol. A defence source said “there was a problem and it was concerning”, but that it was picked up by “the system”.

Was this the same sub spotted on the surface by CalMac passengers from Ullapool in August this year? Did its crew think it was submerged? https://www.northern-times.co.uk/news/loch-broom-sub-mystery-it-was-suddenly-there-on-the-surfac-323014/

Was this the same unnamed sub that dragged and badly damaged the fishing trawler, the Karen, in 2015, unaware that it was doing so perhaps because it did not know what depth it was at? At the time Penny Mordaunt MoD Minister was confident no British submarine had been involved but later admitted one had. She has always been out of her depth: https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2015/sep/07/mod-admits-british-submarine-dragged-fishing-trawler-through-irish-sea

Or, worse still, are others subs suffering from similar dangerous faults?

Was this same submarine that ran aground off Skye in 2010 or are they all lost half the time? https://www.theguardian.com/uk/2010/oct/22/submarine-runs-aground-scotland

Is this a problem with UK subs going back years? In 1990, why did HMS Trenchant’s crew not know it had dragged the crew of the Antares to their deaths? They were too close in depth and surface to avoid the Antares. Why? Equipment failures? https://www.northern-times.co.uk/news/loch-broom-sub-mystery-it-was-suddenly-there-on-the-surfac-323014/

Did a UK submarine at the wrong depth sink a trawler off Cornwall in 2004, because it did not see it or was too close for the rules? https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2021/oct/12/navy-officers-deny-a-submarine-sank-the-fishing-boat-17-years-ago

Why did a UK submarine sink an Irish trawler in 1982? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pNJB1HXVCuQ&ab_channel=CR%27sVideoVaults

Putting all of the above together is our submarine fleet in a crisis, a fiasco even? Should BBC Scotland’s ‘brave’ Disclosure team do a special? Should the Minister be door-stepped?

  1. We know they are not safe certainly a risk to everyone on this planet simply because they carry nuclear weapons , only idiots think it’s okay to put nuclear weapons on a submarine
