Nearly 3 000 more Covid deaths had Labour run Scotland’s pandemic response – why Welsh Labour voted down a inquiry?

On 30 November 2022, the Labour Government in Wales voted down a separate Covid inquiry.

From Nation.Cymru on 1 December:

The voting down of calls for a Welsh inquiry into Covid is “the most shameful day in the history of the Labour Government in Cardiff Bay,” Welsh Tories have said.

Welsh Conservative-led calls for the Welsh Parliament to set up its own inquiry into Covid were narrowly voted down in the Senedd yesterday, 30 November.

All the main opposition parties in Wales have called for a Wales-only-inquiry, as have campaign groups such as the Covid-19 Bereaved Families for Justice Cymru (CBFJC). But the Welsh Government has argued that a UK-wide inquiry will be the best way to examine decisions made in the four UK nations.

The aim was to establish a special purpose Senedd committee to identify where the UK inquiry is not able to fully scrutinise the response of the Welsh Government and Welsh public bodies to the pandemic.

Calls for Wales to have its own Covid inquiry have been repeated following a recent admission that the UK inquiry “cannot cover every issue” relating to Wales.

Speaking after the proposal was defeated, Welsh Conservative Shadow Health Minister, Russell George MS said: “It is incredible that Labour has again blocked attempts to impose scrutiny and accountability on them by blocking the formation of this committee.

“We have always maintained that a Wales-specific Covid inquiry is the best way to scrutinise ministers on their decision-making without being overshadowed by events in England, but if they were to continue blocking one, maybe they would, at least, agree to this committee that fills the gaps the UK-wide inquiry would inevitably leave.

“This may well go down as the most shameful day in the history of the Labour Government in Cardiff Bay’s history – and they already have a great deal to be ashamed of.”

Wales had a 16% higher death rate from Covid than Scotland (377 as opposed to 324.8 per 100K). 16% of Scotland’s 17 390 deaths is 2 869.

You won’t hear any of this from Scottish Labour who will, instead, distract with conspiracy theories of hidden WhatsApp messages and ignore key facts like the above.

  1. Re a comment I made on a previous article here where there was also THIS reported ….

    BBC Wales online headline:

“Covid inquiry: Welsh government WhatsApps may have been deleted”……..”Some messages sent by people working in the Welsh government during the pandemic may have been deleted, the first minister has said”.

“Mark Drakeford said he himself did not use WhatsApp, and would not know how to automatically delete texts”.

“But he could not promise that messages were not lost before the government was aware of what the Covid inquiry wanted”

“The comments follow a row in Scotland over the deletion of messages”

(That will be mostly via ONE Jackie Baillie who currently is giving it laldy via the BBC in Scotland and too elsewhere…..in the true hypocritical position that we see her often adopting)

Jackie Baillie told the Holyrood magazine that “Messages from those closest to the decision making have been destroyed on an industrial scale”……

Tell me would that be in Wales Jackie ?????…..or is that “whataboutery”

  2. I invite you to watch if you haven’t already, a clip from Indyref Two on Douglas Ross sorry, Youtube…
It’s well worth scrolling to very beginning to hear RTwoDitto run his spiel a la HMS James Cook on WhatsApp messages and deletion… https://youtu.be/vBjbEUejnP8

HMS James Cook began prosecuting this distraction a week before the Covid Inquiry were expected to examine #10 WhatsApp evidence and the mysterious disappearing evidence…

SG didn’t use WhatsApp for official business, nor did the Senedd, only HMG under Johnson did so, and introduced the deletion aspect.

This isn’t about who did better or worse over Covid, this about getting Johnson & Co off the hook by sharing blame for HIS unprofessionalism…
