Ferrymageddon – ‘Low employee morale and a bitter dispute’ not blamed on devolved government in Canada

Staff shortages have been a major cause of cancelled sailings and long delays, and angry travellers have taken out frustration on staff. Photo by Darryl Dyck, the Canadian Press.

From The Tyee, today:

“Low employee morale and a bitter dispute over overtime pay are adding to the challenges for BC Ferries, says the head of the union representing workers at the publicly owned company. “The relationship between the employer and the employees, and the employer and the union, is at… an all-time low,” said Eric McNeely, president of the 4,000-member BC Ferry and Marine Workers’ Union.

McNeely said he doesn’t remember the relationship ever being so strained in the 14 years he has worked for BC Ferries. “I meet with members every time I travel, just about everywhere I go, and they’re struggling and they shouldn’t have to struggle to get the pay that they are owed for doing the work they conducted.”

BC Ferries has had a growing number of cancelled sailings, many of them due to staffing shortages. Ferries can’t sail unless they meet the minimum crew requirements Transport Canada sets. That has meant travellers with and without reservations experiencing long waits, even on weekdays in October when ferry traffic is relatively light.”

As in all other reporting in Canada but utterly unlike that in Scotland, no government is ever blamed for what seems to be a far more real ‘ferry fiasco’ than we’ve ever seen here.

BC Ferries operates older ferries in a more temperate climate and in a more affluent area than CalMac.

Also, in Scotland, from 2015, CalMac has been a Living Wage employer and were the first transport operator to become so.

CalMac is currently operating at 95.4% reliability for the Summer season.

  1. O/T John spot the differences.
Nicola Sturgeon she had 3 forensic tents in her garden and treated like a serial killer for alleged misuse of £600k of the SNP’s own money.

Mone & husband Barrowman FINALLY admit involvement with PPE Medpro & £200+ million VIP lane deals
Is Campbell and the rest going to doorstep these two I doubt it.
