Editor – When I said ‘anything about ferries is good’ I didn’t mean GOOD news about them!

Appearing only, as far as I can see, in some local newspapers and the Morning Star:

The Scottish Government has confirmed that the ferry scheme for young people will be extended to all island residents under the age of 22.

The scheme offers four free single (two return) ferry journeys a year to the mainland. At present it covers 16-18 year olds and eligible full time volunteers up to the age of 26. More people will be able to access ferry vouchers as a result of this change.

Minister for Transport Fiona Hyslop said:

“Ferries are an essential part of Scotland’s transport network, providing a vital lifeline for island residents. I’m pleased that more young people will soon be able to benefit from this initiative, saving them money during the cost crisis.”

Minister for Zero Carbon Buildings, Active Travel and Tenants’ Rights Patrick Harvie said:

“This is great news for young people living on Scotland’s islands and complements our hugely popular scheme to give young people free access to bus travel.

“This is further action that will save young people money, remove cost barriers to transport and support more sustainable travel choices.”

This follows, in May 2023:

Since the Young Persons’ Free Bus Travel Scheme launched in January 2022, more than 62 million journeys have been made by over 620,000 young people.

The increased patronage has enabled some operators to introduce additional services, making bus travel more accessible than ever. This includes West Coast Motors, who doubled the frequency of services on one of their main routes earlier this year following increased demand from students travelling to and from university.

The Morning Star was one of the few to cover this too, positively that is.

The Express had The SNP’s free bus pass scheme for under-22s has been ‘hijacked’ by county lines drug gangs

That other tabloid the Herald had Scotland travel: Free bus travel scheme ‘fuelling rise in disorder’

In response, to little media coverage, the Scottish Government insisted: There is no evidence to suggest that there has been a rise in youth crime in Scottish cities as a result of the provision of free bus passes to people under the age of 22.

  1. Great news and it is certainly well used by the youngsters in my area.

I love the “The Express had The SNP’s free bus pass scheme for under-22s has been ‘hijacked’ by county lines drug gangs”. It shows that regardless how dim you were at school, there is always an opportunity in journalism.

As for the Herald, there’s that “Trusted Journalism” again! 🙂
