Channel Islanders ‘furious’ as brand new Dutch-built ‘troubled’ ferry, repaired in Spain but pulled after only three days

From ITVx today:

Condor Ferries‘ new cross-channel ship, the Islander, is out of service due to technical problems just three days after its first passenger sailing. The ferry arrived in Guernsey from the UK on Sunday 22 October on its maiden passenger sailing. It wasn’t able to continue on to Jersey and returned to Portsmouth instead.

It’s understood an issue with the ship’s bow thrusters led to sailings between Thursday 26 October and Thursday 2 November being cancelled. The 125m long conventional ferry was bought with the help of a £26 million loan from the States of Guernsey. When approached by ITV News, a spokesperson for Condor Ferries declined to comment on the disruption.

The MV Condor Islander only entered service in 2023 but has been troubled from the start:

The vessel was scheduled to begin service in early November 2023, however, this was brought forward earlier than planned to October 2023, with freight services starting on 8 October and both passenger and freight services on 15 October. Due to the late installation of vital equipment, this was then pushed back again to the 20 October 2023.

On 23 October 2023, the service to Jersey from Guernsey was cancelled due to technical problems and the ship departed for Portsmouth earlier than scheduled.

On 25 October 2023, it was announced that the vessel would be pulled out of service until 2 November of the same year, and all sailings would be cancelled until then. This was caused by issues with the front bow thrusters.

Meanwhile, CalMac were operating yesterday at 95.2% reliability with the ‘aging’ MV Hebridean Isles sailing at 100%, to Islay, after repairs in Aberdeen and only the Tarbert – Portavadie (population ‘N/A’) service off.

  1. “Meanwhile, CalMac were operating yesterday at 95.2% reliability”

It’s not the 95.2% that will be focused upon, by the media, though is it…..it’s the rest of that percentage that fails to make it up to100% that will form the basis of all negativity……

I mean at a guess you could get a good 10 (low estimate) negative news stories based on the percentage outwith the 95.2% that failed to operate reliably …..surely !
