English and Welsh prisoners to be sent to foreign prisons as number of incarcerated is projected to soar 28% above Scotland

Despite being in the former Glasgow Herald, this story is about prisoners from England & Wales only being sent to foreign prisons – Rwanda?

Scotland currently has 137 prisoners per 100 000 population. England & Wales has 144 per 100 000.

Despite a growing population, the prison population of Scotland has been stable for some time at and is not expected to grow beyond 7 600.

The prison population in England and Wales is projected to grow to between 93,100 and 106,300 by 2027.

All things being equal, the prison population of England & Wales should be around 11 times higher than that of Scotland, or 83 600. By 2027 it is projected to be around 23 000 or 28% higher.

  1. I’m pretty sure this is why we had a negative Scottish prison story blazoned on the BBC website earlier last week. Every time a negative UK story is brewing the press seems to rush to slot in a Scottish bad story beforehand, presumably to try and establish in folks minds that Scotland is failing too

Thank goodness we are least have alternative news sources here in Scotland, a great legacy of the 2014 referendum. However it looks as if the union propagandists have clicked their messages are being challenged and are now more focused in driving wedges between indy supporting figures instead – let’s hope we can see this threat off too

    1. The sole task of the BBC in Scotland (and other Britnat propagandists) is to find “matches” which can be manipulated to make Scotland appear as bad or worse than down south.
Accuracy, honesty and fairness don’t count.
Context and perspective are journalistic tools, and so are not relevant.

    2. In Elizabeth House in Edinburgh, there is a squad of ‘hacks’ led by the former Chief Political Reporter of the Herald, Magnus Gardham whose job is to churn out such stories in journalese and send them to editors ready for copying and pasting into newspapers and websites. Very generously, they permit the newspapers to give one of their own journalists a by-line for the story.

In all probability, these press releases come with quotes from DRoss, Her Dameness the Jaikie of Baillie and Eck Cauld-Ham. The newspapers then have the option of adding at the very end a DENIAL (always a ‘denial’) by an SNP spokesperson, by which time most people have stopped reading.

  2. During the pandemic, England regularly sent some of their Covid patients ‘abroad’ to Scottish hospitals for care & treatment as their own hospitals were apparently bursting at the seams. Am surprised they don’t take a similar approach with their surfeit of prisoners, or is there some legal impediment stopping them?

Or do they just baulk at the thought of giving Scotland money by renting prison space from us?
