New ferry will still have capacity nearly SIX times average customer demand

The Herald’s ferry feeding frenzy continues today with:

‘Beyond belief’: Scots fiasco ferries to have 300-passenger cut for safety reasons

The Ardrossan-Brodick crossing carried a total of nearly 700 000 passengers last year.

There are 16 crossings almost every day, all year long, giving a total of around 5 800 per year.

So, the average sailing takes around 120 passengers.

So, a safety cut from 1 000 to 700 is a problem?

I think not. The Herald is the problem.

Who can’t believe the safety reduction?

  1. The Caledonian Isles can carry up to 1000 passengers, where they would put them other than forced on to the upper decks I’ve no idea, as far as the stairwells are concerned, if you’ve been on the Caley, you’ll know how narrow those are coming from the car deck and I doubt strongly the Sannex would be narrower, so question mark over that issue. The reduction is specific, so this is about seating availability not the ability to get down to the car deck in an emergency, as Bob says a mountain out of a molehill and just plain prevarication.

    Golfnut.

  2. “Two vessels at the centre of Scotland’s ferry fiasco are to carry nearly 300 passengers fewer than contracted for to meet safety standards, it can be revealed.”

The article says they will now carry 852 passengers instead of 1,000..

That number of passengers will still be more than CalMac’s biggest ferry MVvLoch Seaforth which carries fewer passengers but more vehicles.

Could a recently passed EU maritime safety law for ferries be a reason?
