Labour call for urgent fungal inspection of ferries in case of deadly spread from hospitals

Jimmy Shanks, Labour Councillor, has returned to campaign in Rutherglen, from a holiday in Washington State USA. While there, Jimmy had to be evacuated from the 50 year-old Walla Walla ferry, above, which ran aground due to “gross bacterial and fungal growth” in its fuel supply system, leading to severe fuel filter plugging and loss of power.

Local media inferred that the vessel’s advanced age was a contributing factor to the fungal growth but the Walla Walla is by no means old in the Washington State Ferries fleet where the oldest, the MV Tillikum, is 64. Four of the 21 vessel fleet are over 50, and 11 of the 21 are over 40.

The oldest CalMac ferry, the MV Isle of Arran, is 40 but all of the other 33 are under 40.

In the wake of reports from a source that several patients from the pigeon fungus-riddled Queen Elizabeth University have travelled back to Argyll and beyond with CalMac, BBC Scotland has made a freedom of information application to the Scottish Government for details of fungal inspections of their fleet.

James Cook is expected to front a special on this crisis. The working title for the show is SNP Government’s Fatal Fungus Ferry Fiasco.

      1. If you care to delve into it I think you will find that what has happened here is that.
Instead of one of the engineers being designated as onboard chemist, for the scheduled testing and reporting on all onboard fluids.
And sending routine samples to the labs ashore.
The testing of the fuel system has been automated.
All well manged shipping/marine companies have been testing and treating all onboard fluids since I went to sea. More likely since before I was born.

    1. Hmm WP seem to have changed settings it’s all over the place. I wonder if they are requiring people who follow and comment on blogs to have a WP account? Anyone know?

  1. John, how do you know that Jimmy Shanks was on that ferry in Washington? Did he tweet about it? BBC Scotland don’t really report on the ferries that often anyway, and I think that you need to stop obsessing over what’s going on with ferries in other places.

    1. And further to this, why not talk about the SNP’s achievements in government and how they positively affect the people of Rutherglen and Hamilton West, like the Scottish Child Payment, or free tuition?

      1. John does report on those things, but his aim is also to call out BBC and other media lies and propaganda about Scotland, in Scotland. The BritNat parties head quartered in London, operating in Scotland, need to be called out for their disgraceful lies. Along with EngGovs BBC, I consider them to be at war with Scotland’s democracy, and certainly attempting to deny Scotland their democratic rights.
As broadcasting is a reserved power to the English government, the people of Scotland have to at least try to get the truth out to the people by other means. Thanks John for your hard work in this field…
