‘Unmitigated ferries disaster’ has nothing to do with devolved government……in Canada

Four days ago, from the Coast Reporter in British Columbia, Canada, with its island archipelago ferry fleet a bit like that of CalMac but in warmer, less windy, waters and with less generous subsidies than Scotland’s islanders get from that SNP Government:

FAC calls BC Ferries service to Sunshine Coast ‘unmitigated disaster’ amid cancellations

‘It’s inadequate service all year long, it’s getting worse and worse’: Southern Sunshine Coast FAC tells BC Ferries executives at biannual meeting, and asks for solutions.

It’s a near 1 000 word report but the author finds no space to mention, far less blame, the devolved government in Vancouver. The opposition parties also fail to get on deck with any sniping at the ‘centre-left’ New Democratic Party government.

On the same day (21 September) as the above report came out in Canada, CalMac’s reliability figure for 523 sailings was 99.2% with only 1 of 14 Arran sailings and 1 Campbelltown sailing cancelled.

  1. I haven’t seen any BBC Scotland or STV reports on ferries or the “ferry fiasco” since earlier this month so what’s the point of posts focusing on other countries’ ferry services?

      1. I suspect both BBC and STV had realised that the repeated attempts at portraying this “Fiasco”, “Chaos”, etc line is becoming counter productive.

In my opinion, it is through the the work of TUS and others in highlighting how absurd and ridiculed the “Ferry Fiasco” had become that they stopped it.

        1. From Stephen McKenzie:

It’s because WordPress is now asking for us, or perhaps it’s just me, to “Log In” with an account otherwise the reply comes up as “Anonymous”. It didn’t used to do that.

    1. ‘so what’s the point of posts focusing on other countries’ ferry services? ‘

One might go further – or posts focusing on other countries’ economy, or health services, or energy production assets, or education provision, or research and innovation capabilities, or export performance, or inward investment performance, or arts and cultural assets, or …. I could go on and on!

If a topic hasn’t been seen in a BBC or STV news report recently then what’s the point of posts focusing on matters in other countries? Shouldn’t talking up Scotland be something to do reactively, only in response to BBC or STV reports? Is being on the ‘back foot’ not our proper place?

Of course not! Well-reasoned, evidence-based ‘talking up’ of Scotland proactively is legitimate at any time – it’s normal in other countries too!. Here it is especially necessary as a counterbalance to much of BBC, STV and most newspapers’ coverage of Scotland. After all, the dominant news organisations ‘serving’ Scotland typically operate context- and perspective-free journalism.
