Canadian ferry operator forced to shuffle one 47 year-old ferry to serve population the size of Glasgow

The BC Ferries MV Queen of Alberni, above, in 2020.

Yesterday, we see:

Multiple cancellations set for the next few weeks between Horseshoe Bay and Langdale, starting Sunday.

According to BC Ferries, the cancellations are because the Queen of Alberni ferry will be used for service on the Duke Point to Tsawwassen route, while the Coastal Renaissance is being repaired.

As a result, 27 sailings between Vancouver and the Sunshine Coast will be cancelled, starting with tomorrow’s sailing departing Horseshoe Bay at 3:20 p.m.

The population of Vancouver is 675 218, comparable to Glasgow’s 635 130. The Sunshine coast area has a population of 29 970 comparable to that of Bute and Cowal at 20 346.

The MV Bute serving Rothesay in Bute is 18 years old.

The MV Argyll Flyer serving Dunoon in Cowal is 22.

  1. My recollection of the BC ferries I travelled on were that they were mostly
larger vessels than most of Calmac’s,especially the super ferries between Tsawwassen and the Island.
Consequently, the impact of vessel breakdowns affect more people but at the end of the day,the issues are the same and people are going to complain about their travel plans being disrupted.
The moral of the story is,stay away from being responsible for running island ferry services.

  2. Its an interesting boat, it seems to have a bridge at both ends.

Which reminds me of the time the Waverley was in Helensburgh on one of its trips a good few years back. The crew seemed to have trouble with forward motion of the paddles when leaving Helensburgh. Their solution was to just engage reverse motion and then it then set off back towards Glasgow in reverse.

  3. By far the greater point is how the City News Vancouver reported it as actual news, that “…mechanical failure on Tuesday stranded ferry passengers off Tsawwassen for hours…”.

None of the performative outrage as from Scotland’s political media bubble should anything go awry with a ferry in construction or in service, no political implications, no portrayals of abandoned island residents starving to death or businesses on the brink of ruination because they can’t be arsed using the alternative ferry, or come to that ferry spotters highlighting the same ferry was 20 minutes late ALL day…

Canadians would be furious if it’s media attempted to play such naked political propaganda games as Scots have to thole, who can only roll eyes and sigh at the latest guff from Martin Williams then ignore it….
