The tides are with Scotland

In the UK Government’s latest renewable auction, seven tidal stream projects, which harness the power of the gravitational pull of the moon and the sun using floating or sea-bed mounted turbines, have secured contracts:

Scotland

  • SAE Renewables, secured 21.94MW of capacity (Pentland Firth, MeyGen)
  • Orbital Marine Power, secured 7.2MW (Orkney, EMEC)
  • Magallanes secured 1.5MW (Orkney, EMEC)

Wales

  • Hydrowing secured 10MW (Ynni’r Lleaud)
  • Verdant secured 4.9MW (Anglesey, Morlais)
  • MOR Energy secured 4.5MW (Anglesey, Morlais)
  • Magallanes secured 3MW (Anglesey, Morlais)

This builds on the London School of Economics report in June 2023, reported as:

Scotland ‘has more tidal stream capacity than rest of world combined’, LSE study says

In the report, we read:

Scotland demonstrates leadership in tidal stream innovation. (P6)

Capturing export opportunities – Scotland-based Nova Innovation has secured an export order for 15 tidal turbines and a power purchase agreement from the Canadian province of Nova Scotia (Nova Innovation, 2022). (P20)

Arguably, tidal stream energy already appears more prominently in support of economic growth policies at a regional level under devolved administrations than it does at the national level. For example, in January 2023, the Scottish Government published its draft Energy and Just Transition Plan in which it outlines its vision for marine energy, underlines the importance of continued funding through the CfD for the development of the sector and seeks views on the priority actionsit can take to further advance tidal energy in Scotland (Scottish Government, 2023). Scotland’s success in tidal stream energy to date is visible in the outcome of the AR4 in which most of the revenue support for the technology has been secured by companies and project sites based in Scotland (OES, 2023). Scotland is also home to the European Marine Energy Centre (EMEC) where many of the world’s leading tidal devices to date have been tested in real sea conditions for the first time. (P21)

We find a positive correlation between high-innovation locations in tidal stream energy and offshore wind, with Eastern Scotland and the Highlands and Islands standing out as having a particularly high volume of patenting in both.

  1. I note that the BBC is headlining the fact that the auction for off-shore wind generation attracted no bids.

This comprises the bulk of the report, it mentions, later in the article that the auction for tidal and wave energy generation attracted bids, but does not say any more than that.

The Scotland page simply links to the UK Business page as does that for Wales.

It is of note that the Pentland Firth proposal generates as much power as the four projects for Wales. This is to pre-empt any unionist carps that ‘little’ Wales had FOUR sites bu Scotland has only THREE.

  2. I think though you are forgetting we here in Scotland are apparently too stupid to manage, and also to gain any advantage for our economy, via our own resources if we were independent….only as part of the UK do our resources become beneficial via economic gains and too when under the management of a UK government….is that not the promoted theory put forward by both Pro UK political parties and their media.

If some Scots do indeed buy into this THEORY…..that a resource of their country loses value and worth if owned and managed by their own country if it , as a country, was independent…… yet miraculously as a former worthless resource for an independent Scotland it then is miraculously transformed into a NOW valuable asset for another (fake) country (state) taking ownership of it…. and in them taking ownership (stealing) of it as a (Scottish) resource it then sees them, and them alone, deciding who will benefit from it ….which is pretty much a case of once again Scotland ‘pooling and sharing’ what we have but NOT for our benefit alone but for the benefit of OTHERS…..

Remember the RULE….if it’s FOR an independent Scotland then there is NO value to it as a Scottish resource……BUT….once it becomes associated with ONLY being FOR the UK it then has GREAT value…that is as a value….when tis promoted as being a UK resource……simples…..or perhaps NOT.

  3. Wind is great, an solar tae, but head and shoulders above them is tidal, guaranteed green energy 20hrs per day, every day, forever.

Angus Council however have banned applications for tidal generation in the river South Esk here in Montrose, they have also banned every wind farm application bar 1, and the 1 has only 8 small turbines at Ark Hill, between Glamis and Dundee, yet they claim to be a green council.

    1. Spot on Alex…tidal waves seems to be something, via an excellent source of renewable energy, that so far, does not WASH with the self appointed powers that be within the UK aka the UK government…..probably because as yet they have not been able to establish how they can best turn a huge profit for a company owned by a Tory donor…..and also how to ensure it will benefit other countries within the UK (as in ONE specific one only) outwith Scotland MORE than Scotland itself…..

  4. Isn’t it strange that the Scottish government and in particular the SNP and the Scottish Green Party are always so quiet about these huge assets and the sale of them by Englands Westminster surely if they had an ounce of Scottish patriotism in them they would be shouting from the rafters about these sell offs , it makes me think they are all on the gravy train and say just enough periodically to steer clear of being dumped at election time.
I want a Scottish independence party one that day in day out shouts long and loud about how our valuable assets are being stripped from us we don’t know who owns what or who buys it or where they are based no names ever linked no background info on their history

Shame on Scottish government weak spineless blood sucking betrayers

    1. Indeed…but who will give them a platform as in an equal and fair hearing, to do so within the media ? (minus the “some critics say”….”experts say” and too not forgetting “opposition parties say” alternate Pro UK position/opinions)

Speciality of the media is that when any press conference is undertaken by the SNP ,via an announcement or topic related to an Indy Scotland, then they, the media, attend and rather than putting questions to seek further info or clarification on THAT given subject they, the media, challenge what they, the SNP, say (many a time based on accusations via opposition parties)…try to then cast doubt and confusion….and then ask Q’s unrelated to the subject in hand….

Then all subsequent output via the media that day (and on the following days) is tainted and corrupted by their unique and partisan ‘Take’ on the SNP announcement or position on Indy (say like if the subject, via press conference, was about ‘The WORTH and capacity/potential of our ASSETS’) ….post the press conference we would then see, hear and read the inclusion of a variety of contributions via opposition politicians to give their perspective and tainted opposing opinions on what the SNP said…..thus the reader, listener or watcher of their media output is STILL clueless as to what’s what or now has doubts to the veracity of what was said by the SNP…..also known as a JOB DONE by the media…..that is also why on debate shows the SNP and Indy members of a panel are always outnumbered by the Pro UK members on a panel….to include also the HOST of the debate show ( oh and the AUDIENCE too)……. honestly we are so ‘up against the machine’ that is with THOSE who support the UK…….via a multitude of establishments and institutions…..which also….. unbelievably NOW includes some Indy supporters too…..no wonder some soft No’s are unconvinced…….when the MAJORITY of news is on the Pro UK side…..via MSM….not everyone relies upon t’internet for info and news…and if they do perhaps they seek info in the WRONG places…..

Anyway only my opinion…have a nice day

      1. Not my real name ,

There are films about exactly what you say
Where all the newspapers were controlled by government or some other force
        What do people do ?
        They printed their own

If you can’t get your message out through tv or newspapers
        Do it with billboards
Put up adverts on every street that has them
        Telling people about it

Don’t just sit back and say
Oh well they control the media nothing we can do

We need people who fight back
        People who answer back
Who lose their temper and make it clear we are not happy

We don’t need people like the current mob who think that by being nice and smiley and complimentary to our enemy the BBC Scotland and the newspapers because it makes them and our cause look weak

I’m sick of the soft touch politics that has taken over SNP

Hi , I wish people would rally together….but are we not , as a movement, hampered by the current division that exists within our movement….where perhaps any future publication, billboards, adverts in newspapers etc that are produced could and probably would be attacked and contradicted by a different faction within the Indy movement if there was any assumed or actual association/link with supporters of the SNP…..

I do concur that the YES movement is NOT all about the SNP…..but think for a moment not about us but about those voters still unconvinced who identify ONLY the SNP as being the ones that THEY see that represent independence…..so if we turn our backs on the SNP….how long would it then take us to GROW more support for another Indy party….or would it end up being presented by our opposition, as in Pro UK peeps, as an example in how flawed independence was and is AS A CAUSE….via a party (SNP) THEY will say is now abandoned by Indy supporters.

How do you rally support and fund the things you suggest to promote truths on Scottish independence…..as without being a ‘TIN FOIL’ head ….do you think the powers that be would not in some way try to subvert our message and infiltrate our organisation in some way…..never underestimate our opposers….sorry if I am being somewhat dismissive of your above points, which as a course of action is very good BTW…..but I am realist and many before us tried to leave Britain and it was NOT pretty , courteous change or civil acceptance of their departure….

Honestly I know it may seem that JUST adding comments onto blogs instead or DOING something is futile but then how do we vent our anger, frustration, truths etc….and you never know a casual browser may actually read your comment(s) and too that of the person who owns the blog….and thus pass on the message….as in the ones the media and opposition parties REFUSE to pass on

  5. Sorry I meant to also add that writing this “Shame on Scottish government weak spineless blood sucking betrayers” will go a long way in dissuading any, as yet, unconvinced/undecided Scots who may choose to browse this INDY blog and who may read your above comment to not then cast doubt, with them, upon independence as a worthwhile cause for them to support and vote for ….via what is happening within the independence movement being DIVIDED (thus then assumed to be more than likely easily CONQUERED by the Pro UK side)…..

Indeed it will prove to them that probably tis best to stick with a Pro UK party and too the UK itself, sorry if that is harsh of me to specify or interpret your comment as such, but I do think it’s what COULD happen…as in if you cast doubt then that is what you will get as a reaction from those still unconvinced/undecided upon independence for Scotland….another ‘Job done’ perhaps , though unintentional by you in your motive via your comment , it may turn out to be the same one, as in JOB DONE, by those who represent the Pro UK MSM……unless of course your real intention, via your comment, was to say rally support for another NEW alternate independence party ?

    Still wish you a nice day/evening though…..

  6. Good to see progress with tidal power. That’s the Way To Go!

I do see more benefit to small ports and harbours from wind than they ever got from oil and gas. Tidal energy should be no different with plenty local opportunities.
