Thousands in Rutherglen and Hamilton West will be protected by new SNP rent controls that Labour will not support and that BBC Scotland hide from them

Headed Humza Yousaf announces new childcare, poverty and housing plans (https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/live/uk-scotland-66710264/page/3), in more than 40 short reports over three online pages, BBC Scotland misses out this one entirely:

Speaking in the Scottish Parliament on Tuesday, Humza Yousaf said his government would introduce a major new housing bill to introduce new regulations for landlords as well as cash for housebuilding.

The First Minister said the bill would include rent controls and create new rights for tenants.

Aditi Jehangir, secretary of tenants’ union Living Rent, welcomed the move and urged the Government to “make sure this legislation delivers for tenants”.

She said: “The commitment to rent controls today is exactly the type of leadership we need to address the scale of the housing crisis.

Why this omission? On 28 June in the Independent:

Labour scraps pledge to bring in rent controls in latest U-turn

Lisa Nandy says controlling what landlords can charge could make people homeless

  1. If only those pesky Scots did NOT have access to the English media news….where we get to see the Tory path that New New Labour intend to travel down….

I mean the media here in Scotland are doing their best to camouflage the double standards at play via Labour….but then those pesky colleagues of theirs down South spoil it all by giving the game away…..is there NO co-ordination possible ?

The media here in Scotland are trying to take two steps forward in alienating voters against the SNP while simultanously also trying to engage those same voters to embrace a Pro UK party as in Labour….but then along comes the English editions of the news and hey presto the media here , via all of their efforts , then find themselves going three steps BACK !….and suddenly all of their PR work on behalf of the Labour party goes down the Swanee……oh dear…how sad….

See that’s the ONLY good thing about us CURRENTLY being in the UK….we get to hear the news where they are which contradicts the news where we (supposedly) are….and that does not work out well for the Pro UK political parties…or indeed for their (NON) Union…..and that news via down South…..as a source of news……..
together with blogs like this is a perfect combination to highlight and expose the lies, omissions and God awful job the media here in Scotland (fail to) do when they TRY to cover (up) political matters …BUT tis actually a win win….for us that is….them…not so much….oh dear…how sad.

  2. Good. I’d like to see evictions/notice to quit time limit raised from three months to one year. Three months is not enough notice in which to prepare to find somewhere else to live, and make the preparations, as well find the funds to find a suitable home. With many people, no doubt younger folk, having to give up their home because they can’t afford the mortgage now, (certainly in ess well off streets around us they have many ‘for sale’ signs up) more rented property is going to be in even higher demand. ScotGov have done a brilliant job with their affordable house building, which would never have happened had Labour branch office been at the helm. I wonder if Scotand’s population is going up, or down anyone know?
Edinburgh seems busier than ever, and sadly it’s also a mess with graffiti and rubbish all over the streets, and road blocks, (supposed works) since the Labour/Tory council installed themselves last year. It’s horrendous.

  3. Letting agencies illegally charge women six month up front rent and deposit, even with good credit. Makes it harder for abused women to find alternative accommodation and end up homeless. Or no secure roof over their head.

Women who co habit (the majority) do not have equal rights. They have to put in a claim (1/3) within a year. There is little legal aid and it can take years. Abused women have to stay in abusive places or lose the roof over their heads.

  4. Off topic (apologies) but given the figures of funding for 50 schools to be rebuilt in England its worth considering the Scottish school building numbers over past years:
    https://www.gov.scot/news/new-schools-and-campuses-for-scotland/
(2019 figures but likely to be similar since then).
928 schools newly built or substantially refurbished in 12 years.
77 per year… so pro-rata England should manage 850 or so (ca 11 times population) per year. However real figure seems to be 50.
