NHS Scotland staffed and equipped for nearly 99% of ops as planned despite increasing demand and NHS England has 74% more cancellations

From Public Health Scotland today:

During July 2023, there were 21,919 operations planned to take place across NHSScotland. This represents a decrease of 10.3% compared to the 24,435 planned for June 2023 but is 11.3% higher than the number planned a year previously in July 2022 (19,685).

Of all planned operations during July 2023, for NHSScotland, 653 (3.0%) were cancelled by the hospital based on clinical reasons, 678 (3.1%) were cancelled by the patient, 317 (1.4%) were cancelled by the hospital due to capacity or non-clinical reasons, and 84 (0.4%) were cancelled due to other reasons.

So planned operations are up 11.3%, more than 2 000 extra, and yet only 1.4% had to be cancelled by the unavailability of staff or operating theatres. Staff become ill, equipment develops faults yet 98.6% reliability in a massive system of this size carrying out operations on a quarter of a million patients every year? Fantastic. Highly praiseworthy but ignored by the media.

NHS England cancelled operations are not strictly comparable, they say, but look at this:

During Q12023/24,17,024 operations were cancelled at the last minute for non-clinical reasons by NHS providers. In the same period in 2022/23, there were 17,579 cancelled operations.

So, NHS Scotland’s non-clinical cancellations add up to 1 007. All things being equal with ten times the population, NHS England might have been expected to have had 10 070 but had 17 579, 74% more.

  1. Oh dear!

“Birmingham City Council has declared itself effectively bankrupt.

The local authority – the largest in Europe – has issued a Section 114 notice preventing all but essential spending to protect core services.

The pressures have been linked to a £760m bill to settle equal pay claims.

In a joint statement, the leader and deputy leader of the Labour authority said the notice was a “necessary step as we seek to get our city back on a sound financial footing”.”

  2. Westminster Gov funding NHS £125Billion for years. No increase. Westminster Gov spending £1000Billion.

UK raises £631Billion. Westminster spends £1000Billion. Borrowing and spending in the rest of the UK.

    Scotland raised £87Billion spends £54Billion.

    1. Yes I heard this. The arrogance of the Radio 4 Today programme interviewer, the ‘famed’ Nick Robinson was on display. Employed to interview, he decided this morning to assert and then denied his interviewee the opportunity to respond to his assertion. He made sure HE had the last word, leaving the listener with HIS view not that of his interviewee.

By all means challenge but the interviewee must be given the opportunity to respond.

      Appalling broadcast journalism.
