BBC England’s non-political reporting shown to be far superior to BBC Scotland

Today BBC UK has:

The parents of a teenager who died in hospital two years ago are calling for patients to be given the right to an urgent second opinion, if they feel their concerns are not being taken seriously by medical staff.

Martha Mills, who would have been 16 today, died after failures in treating her sepsis at King’s College Hospital. An inquest said she could have survived had her care been better.

In nearly 1 400 words there is no reference to any politician, government or opposition.

In 2016, BBC Scotland had:

The mother of a 10-year-old girl who died at a Glasgow children’s hospital claims she was “let down and lied to” by health officials. Milly Main contracted an infection in 2017 while recovering from leukaemia at the Royal Hospital for Children. Her mother told the BBC she was “100%” certain contaminated water caused the fatal infection.

Greater Glasgow health board insists the source of the infection cannot be determined.

Despite the Glasgow case being less certain of blame, the BBC Scotland report in less than 1 200 words, find space for this extended, explicit and frankly creepy, politicising of the death:

In September she emailed the health secretary asking for answers about her daughter’s death.

“I emailed Jeane Freeman and got a reply 10 days later saying they would look into it and get back to me.

“They did get back to me a number of weeks later with a generic letter. It was addressed to myself and was slightly personal – but not very personal – saying they were holding an inquiry and they would pass it on to the health board’s complaints manager. “

Asked what she wanted to happen next, she said: “I think they should get the answers from the inquiry and release them. I want an apology. I want them to admit what they’ve done is wrong and I want them to admit that they’ve covered it up.”

Jeane Freeman

Health Secretary Jeane Freeman said the email from Milly’s mother in September was the first time she was made aware of the child’s death.

Scottish Labour MSP Anas Sarwar raised Milly’s case at First Minister’s Questions after a whistleblower revealed an unreported clinician-led review had identified 26 possible water supply-related infections in 2017 at the children’s hospital.

Mr Sarwar said: “Milly’s family deserve answers. It’s the health secretary’s job to protect patients and the staff, not the institution.

“They deserve answers and they deserve the the truth and those NHS staff who showed bravery in coming forward to be whistleblowers deserve to be protected.”

Scottish Liberal Democrat health spokesman Alex Cole-Hamilton said Ms Freeman’s decision not to go public was “incomprehensible” and called on her to make a statement at Holyrood on the issue.

The Scottish Conservatives called on the health secretary to resign over the case.

Tory health spokesman Miles Briggs said: “Patients will be absolutely furious that such a serious failure has been covered up by this SNP government.

“The health secretary must apologise to the family and resign or, if she refuses, be sacked.”

  1. A timely reminder of the utter crassness displayed by Sarwar , the Ambulance-chaser , who does not hesitate to use anyone/anything ( including the death of a child ! ) to score political points .
He is a man without shame , without scruples , without a conscience and without a purpose !

  2. Indeed it just shows how the ‘threat’ of independence then results in ‘news where we are’ (NOT)…..been turned into a party political broadcast on behalf of parties in opposition to the SNP via their PR machine in Scotland….mainly being , but not exclusive to, the BBC…

  3. I would say that BBC England are a tad more professional than what is laughingly referred to as BBC Scotland. Who in my opinion, are just a political front dressed up as a news room available to push any SNP Bad agenda.

I know that my own opinion of BBC Scotland is extremely low, but I really cannot think of anyone I speak to, that has a good word to say about them anymore.

As for the thought of paying for their propaganda 🙂

  4. Contaminated water. . What exactly is contaminated water ? what is it contaminated with and where does it come from ? reporters appear not to ask such questions .
If the water supply in the hospital was contaminated I think we would have heard about it by now , surely other people would have become ill with it but what could it be contaminated with ?
There is insufficient information in this report to answer the relevant questions but nevertheless it is used to blame someone , someone in Scottish government and preferably someone in the SNP , that’s the job of Englands propaganda unit in Scotland called BBC Scotland and that’s the job of these unionist politicians , they are actually employed to fight against Scotland to deter Scottish independence and keep Scotland under the control of England and yes they will take any opportunity to do their dirty work .

    1. Worse than that, it was “possible” or “potential” water contamination.

Not once during this extended propaganda campaign was a single piece of evidence furnished of water contamination, not a single sample.
The nearest they could dig up was a “potential” for legionella in the new showers during the pre-commissioning checks.
Not once was a Scottish Water specialist, water scientist or building specialist interviewed to explain how the impossible was possible from a chlorinated public water supply.

As the rest of Glasgow survived despite being on the same water supply, the myth of the “possible” lived on, much as honest reporting by the BBC in Scotland remained “possible”, however unlikely.

  5. I totally agree with all the above posts BBC Scotland is just the political arm of all Unionist parties no matter how many times they tell us we are always fair and impartial in our reporting, boll***s to them I say.
