Homelessness applications were almost twice as high under Labour/Lib Dems in 2006

BBC Scotland continues with another of its selective readings of the latest statistics to suggest a worsening situation in Scotland. We’ve had alcohol deaths ‘the highest since 2008‘, carefully avoiding the 2006 figures, the last year of Labour rule, when they were far higher then than today and are actually plateauing after a pandemic spike. Also, we’ve had ferry cancellations supposedly spiralling over 5 years but ignoring the 20% fall in the most recent year, to give 97.2% reliability.

Now we have:

Child homelessness in Scotland hits new record high. In total, there were 29,652 open homelessness cases in March, which was a 15% rise on last year.

There were around 58 000 cases in 2006, the last year of the Labour Government in Scotland.

  1. Labour did not support MUP or the smoking ban. House fires and relationship break down can cause homelessness.

Women who cohabit, the majority, do not have equal rights. They have to put in a claim (1/3). There is little legal aid. It can take years and cost £thousands. Letting agencies illegally demand 6months rent and deposit even if women have got good credit rating. This can lead to homelessness. Abused women have to stay in unsafe abusive situations because they do not have equal rights. Or face homelessness.

The SNP Gov are building or renovation 6,000 affordable houses a year. That will cut homelessness. Labour & Tories built none and sold off affordable council houses. Not building more. The Scottish SNP Gov have funded £250million over five years for proper, total abstinence, rehab. That will save lives and end homelessness. Saving £Billion on the SNHS. Spend £Millions to save £Billions. Put an end to homelessness. Increased in bank interest can cause homelessness. Brexit will cause homelessness. People can no longer live full time in the EU. Lose of jobs and income.

The Westminster Gov bad policies and poor decisions. Not voted for in Scotland but imposed by Westminster.

  2. I see Jack McConnell (Lord now) is in the picture…same Jack McConnell who now has so much to say about the SNP…..none of it good….as if he , when FM, under a Labour administration at Holyrood was a shining example of how a well run devolved government should be …..

IN 2022 McConnell said that the Police should not be ‘scared; of investigating the Scottish government and it’s officials….via the SNP finance investigation…..

However in 2002 McConnell denied involvement in a local party finance scandal…where he tried to distance himself from a constituency funding scandal that threatened to mar his term of office…..

“After allegations of corruption and financial mismanagement in his Motherwell and Wishaw constituency, Labour admitted on October 15 that the local party had breached rules governing donations. It agreed it had accepted a £375 a quarter contribution from the Iron and Steel Trades Confederation without declaring it to the Electoral Commission, as required by law.

The row echoes the Officegate debacle that brought down McConnell’s predecessor, Henry McLeish, via the previous year”

McConnell has denied any personal involvement and described events in Motherwell and Wishaw as a ‘shocking situation’.

“It later emerged that McConnell received cash from a development fund established by the SAME ISTC partially to fund his failed leadership bid in 2000. It also came to light that Christina Marshall, McConnell’s personal assistant, was a signatory to the fund”.

“Labour launched an inquiry after a local auditor found that up to £11,000 was missing from the local party’s accounts and that the books did not tally with bank accounts. The auditor is reported to have complained of major discrepancies in three accounts”.

Sooooo……McConnell is now sitting pretty in the HOL’s while on his MORAL HIGH HORSE….giving it laldy about the SNP’s finances….and yet in the past his party and he too had their own wee ‘scandal’ via party finances…..yet again the hypocrisy is strong with Labour…and too with McConnell…..also not sure he could be vocal on fidelity in marriage either…based on his previous record (admission) of having an affair while married…..but then again….it IS Labour and McConnell ….so anything is possible…especially hypocrisy….on that they DO excel.

  3. Currently in LABOUR run Wales…it is being reported that “Children could slide deeper into poverty if Wales’ councils suffer more cuts, a charity has warned”

While the the Welsh LABOUR government said ending poverty was an “absolute priority”……this is amidst “town hall budgets facing being squeezed”…..

Caernarfon ward councillor Dewi Jones said “”The things we will face in the next round of cuts will significantly impact people and cause a lot of damage” …and he added “It won’t just be fewer BIN collections or cutting of the grass – it will be cutting important, integral services.” (BIN collections oh that’s Anas Sarwars ‘GO TO’ speciality subject in Scotland….and too the GMB…better get them onto this…perhaps a Welsh GMB rep could call a strike among bin men, and do a similar GMB Rep stunt like the Scottish GMB Rep Chris Williams and record a video about it)….

But back to children and poverty in Labour run Wales where “The Children in Wales charity described future cuts a “deeply concerning”.

“There will be a direct negative impact,” charity head Hugh Russell said”

He added that “People tell us about an inability to access basic services, transport being too expensive, young people missing out on access to health services and education”.

“They tell us they feel they have nowhere to go, nowhere to be without youth services so these are really concerning signs.”

Bangor University social policy lecturer Dr Hefin Gwilym said: “”Youth services have been worst affected, they’ve been cut by around 50% in Wales since 2010 as part of the austerity measures”

The Welsh government’s response was that “Addressing child poverty is an absolute priority, however the major levers for tackling poverty such as welfare benefits and many fiscal powers sit in Westminster,”

” fiscal powers sit in Westminster,”…..oh would that be the SAME “fiscal powers” that impact the Scottish government then….get Jackie Baillie telt…as she seems to think that in Scotland ALL things negative lead to the SNP’s door alone….as does the Labour HQ party also….or rather the HQ and branch office mantra ‘Do as we SAY not as WE DO’. (in Wales)….a guide to hypocrisy in politics if ever there was one….
