Rutherglen Alert – Baillie ignores Scotland’s lowest council tax, rents and other benefits

FFS – He’s u-turned on bus passes!

Platformed by STV (I didn’t say they were perfect) but at least with a Scot Gov explanation at the end:

Scottish Labour have warned ministers not to hike council taxes on the highest bands, claiming such a move could impact the poorest in the country. A consultation document published last month suggested the Scottish Government and local authority body Cosla were preparing to increase council tax on properties in band E or higher on a sliding scale rising from 7.5% to 22.5%.

The move would mirror a similar initiative in 2017. But Scottish Labour local government spokesman Mark Griffin claimed the shift could hit some of the poorest in the country in properties already in the highest bands.

While the Minister does get the chance late on to say:

The potential changes would only affect around a quarter of properties and even after they are taken into account, average council tax in Scotland would still be less than anywhere else in the UK.

This detail is not there:

Scottish council tax payers are getting the best deal in Britain, paying on average £590 a year less than they would in Tory-run England, and £423 less than in Labour-run Wales. Meanwhile, the average increase in council tax, for 2022/23, is smaller in Scotland (3%) than it is in England (3.5%).

Nor do we see this:

While the Herald leads with ‘Appalling’: ScotGov rent curbs fail to prevent new record bill rises and BBC Scotland tell us they are ‘soaring‘ the actual facts of life in Scotland under the SNP, are ignored.

The above ONS data reveal with clarity of a kind they don’t think newsworthy, that private sector rents have been controlled in Scotland in a manner they have not in England.

Nor, of course, do we hear of the other universal benefits in Scotland such as bedroom tax compensation, the child payment, free prescriptions for all, bus passes and free tuition.

  1. This is a variant on the ‘rent controls’ impact on widows living in large houses’.

The largest increases are in the highest Council Tax bands and there is a pretty strong correlation between household income and tax band. Indeed, because there is a limited number of bands, Council tax is a regressive tax and impacts to a greater extent on residents of properties in lower bands. What these rises are intended is to shift the burden towards the more affluent, i.e. to make the tax less regressive.

Because the correlation is not perfect there will be residents of higher council tax band properties who have low incomes and so, a rise will impact on them. However, there is a range of exemptions and benefits which can alleviate things for many of such residents.

But, of course, the opposition and the media will always find the exceptions and present the data out of context.

Council Tax was designed to be regressive by the Tories in the 1990s following the poll tax riots because the poll tax was severely regressive and was also a gerrymandering measure. The poll tax was to replace the rates, which was a progressive property based tax. But wealthy people objected to THEIR rates being used to SUBSIDISE THE SCROUNGERS. The truth of course is that many are greedy bastards.

  2. The Herald also headlines that Jackie Baillie accused the SNP of playing “party politics”.

Breaking News : MSP , in a party, who are in opposition to the SNP, gives her partisan opinion upon that opposition party ..voters are then expected to believe this is then not HER playing “party politics”…..as in treating voters like Idiots.

Well that seems okay then….and too perfectly normal for a newspaper to headline her opinion as if it is a fact and also NEWS !……what is truly “appalling” via The Herald is that this is becoming ‘the norm’ from them and in frequency it also seems to be “soaring” as a ‘habit’ they have adopted…..so much so that, as a situation, it could even be considered to be the REAL news…..”where we are”…..

  3. So the Labour Party lackies in Scotland want Scottish government to put council tax up in Scotland for the people with the lowest incomes but not for the highest incomes they have already lumbered us with lifetime of debt from their last time in power with the PPP building of schools that are already falling down and they are against us reducing drug deaths against us reducing alcohol prices preferring the slow death of alcoholism then there is their partnership with the Conservatives and SDP in Scottish councils they never cease to amaze us how right wing they have become

  5. Average rent London £1300. Average Aberdeen, Glasgow £700+ Edinburgh £800. One bedroom property.

People in public affordable houses, depending on income, pay less.
People on low incomes do not pay the council tax. Rebates.
