In May 2023, BBC Scotland reported Scotland’s river sewage must be more closely monitored – charity as Scotland’s media were awash with reports that Scotland was behind England in monitoring flood drains. It soon emerged that Scotland was monitoring fewer flood drains because there was little point wasting money and time on the many in which there was no risk of sewage in the flow.
Today, the Guardian has:
A nationwide annual health check of England’s water bodies has been delayed by six years, prompting anger from campaigners and politicians, as public alarm grows over the state of the nation’s rivers and coasts.
The assessments, undertaken by the Environment Agency, look at the ecological and chemical condition of rivers, lakes, groundwater, and transitional and coastal waters, and are required under the Water Framework Directive (WFD).
In 2019, the last time the assessments took place, just 14% of rivers were in good ecological health and none met standards for good chemical health. Before 2016 the tests were done annually, but the government has now opted not to deliver a complete update until 2025.
Clean water advocates accused the government of trying to hide the data.
Rivers activist Feargal Sharkey said: “The future of England’s rivers has been sacrificed in a cynical act of self preservation by the very same failed government agency set up to protect them.”

BBC UK has no coverage of this. Indeed, a search of their website finds nothing, ever, on ‘water health checks’ and nothing since 2003 on ‘water health.’
The BBC and almost all of the press have giant images of Lucy Letby and only the Guardian has the water checks story. The FT does not have Letby but equally does not have the water checks story. The Daily Star has the Lionesses instead of Letby, no water checks story but it does have asparagus psychic who predicted Brexit.

It’s understandable. England will need clean drinking water so ours must be perfect for them to take.

They don’t clean water very well, but they clean up with share dividends. They generate a FLOOD of profits.
I would suggest checking on Tory MP investments–and their families–though they like to keep it SECRET.

Filthy rivers filthy politicians awash with crap not fit for humans what you get from Westminster is guaranteed crap , Westminster is full of liars and twisters a clear out is needed not an election , elections will just give you more of the same .

I did have a quiet chuckle at the Grauniad’s “..nationwide annual health check of England’s water bodies…”, that is has been delayed until after the next GE is of course simply coincidence…
Clearly a wizard wheeze from the deplorable Coffey – The Environment Agency is essentially funded by DEFRA, the very department which has turned a blind eye for years to England’s degrading waterways, and spent a fortune on lawyers defending their right to do what the hell they like in Court.
Silence on this from the BBC speaks volumes as to whom they are answerable – Were they were forced to report on it, you’d realise it PDQ when yet another BBC Scotland Disclosure special surfaces, or a Ferret report in the Herald….
Likewise you’ll be hard pressed to find reporting on water shortages and hosepipe bans in England, such is the control of information…
– England is really in very deep trouble over water supplies, all because of their love affair with the myopic Tories…
