So, that’s around 3 000 incidents, many merely verbal, in each year?
There are 173 sites with patients and staff in NHS Scotland.
There are nearly 182 000 staff in NHS Scotland. So 1 in 60 may witness an assault in any one year?
There are nearly 600 000 patients admitted to Scottish hospitals on any one year. So, 1 in 200 may have been ‘assaulted in any one year?’

“Horror toll”
The ONLY real horror is that the Daily Mail is read by anyone in Scotland…their Tory credentials and anti SNP position is abundantly obvious…..I suspect those who STILL buy it as their preferred propaganda newspaper are cut from the same cloth …….Proud Scots BUTS who are actually prouder (for some obscure reason(s) and logic) of being British (that fake identity) than being Scottish……
If we are talking of HORRORS and TOLLS I would say the Tories, as a government, were clocking up an excess in everything that is horrific and excessively high in way of numbers aka toll (of victims) that they as a very bad, extremely uncaring, woefully incompetent and greedy self serving government could ever hope to realise within their term of office (which has seen us enduring a multitude of changes via a continuation of inept Tory PM’s and their equally inept government ministers in what has been a revolving door of continuous changes made at the top…..which has NOT resulted in any improvements in their governance) ….but that is something that the Daily Mail will not emphasise….or relate as being so horrific and one that has resulted in us seeing a high Toll in way of dire consequences for many people within their UK……
Bad press ……an area of expertise for papers like the Daily Mail…. and one that is seemingly only reserved for ONE political party within Scotland….while another party (Tories) get the freedom of the press, via papers like the Daily Mail, to do as they will with no real condemnation, consequences or indeed retribution……Bad press indeed in more ways than one…..and the Daily Mail do excel at and fulfil the criteria as ones who are within the category of BAD PRESS…indeed they do…

Notice that it is ‘NHS’ wards. This is a jibe to support the greater use of private hospitals. I suspect that many of the so called assaults occur in A&E departments at evenings in the weekend when drunkenness is a factor.
In addition, I suspect that many of the ‘assaults’ are insults, verbal abuse and verbal threats. These are unpleasant, but the story seeks to imply physical assaults perpetrated by the ‘great unwashed’.
In schools, most assaults actually occur in P1/2 and in units and schools catering for special needs. These are perpetrated by very young children and people who have mental health issues. It is right that such things are recorded so that the data can be used to help devise ways of preventing recurrences, such as by changes to staff training. I suspect that, in addition to A&E a high proportion of ‘assaults’ will occur in childrens’ wards and in hospitals dealing with mental health.
A nasty story by a nasty newspaper.

My opinion is that any person who physically abused a Health employee should face the law. I addition all health care should be withdrawn forever.

Poor Scottish Daily Wail readers ( if there really are any ! ) must live in constant dread .
Their newspaper ( sic ) of choice is a daily reminder of the nasty , nerve-shredding , capriciousness of living in a backwater like Scotland where , at ANY time , you may be assaulted in A & E by a slavering , violent , intoxicated Scottish Nats , or dunked in sewage in an ”unmonitored ” river , or die of some pigeon-related disease caused by Scottish Hospitals refusing to put anti-pigeon patrols on their roofs , or dying of starvation on a remote Scottish island where the ferry service has been withdrawn since Nicola Sturgeon sold them all off to pay for her new coffee machine – according to The Herald, the BBC and Penny Pantry Mordaunt .

John,
Don’t know if you noticed this but it does make you wonder where all this will end up.

So, that’s meat from Brazil off my ‘To Buy’ List.
Though, of course, WM is also trying to hide country of origin…

Weren’t they trying to remove country of origin altogether (unless it was ‘British’) at one stage. ISTR it being one of the ‘benefits of brexit’…
