Research reveals attainment gap is 6 times wider in English Primary schools

It’s been quiet on the schools attainment gap front for some time as ferries and a range of health afflictions afflicting one or two individuals with easy access to BBC Scotland dominate the viewing and reading landscape. Is Prof Counting, Lindsay Paterson no weil? No cruel answers please!

Anyhow, for some reason this popped into my head while walking the big ginger dug that I have. There must be a shortage of rubbish for me to rebut at the moment.

Almost a year ago, the Nuffield Foundation reported:

The latest report reveals that the education system is still failing to bridge the attainment gap between disadvantaged children and their better-off classmates. This issue has been intensified by the COVID-19 pandemic, which seems to have impacted the attainment of primary school children from lower income families twice as much as their peers.

Less than half of disadvantaged children reach the expected level of attainment at the end of primary school compared with nearly 70% of their better-off peers.

First, the attainment gap at the end of Primary school including largely literacy and numeracy scores, age 11, in England is more than 20%.

In Scotland Primary school ends a year later, age 12, so the comparison is not precise, but the gap is now only 3.4% in literacy and 3.7% in numeracy:

  1. Prof Lindsay Paterson….another ‘expert’ on speed dial for the BBC here in Scotland…..I mean where is THE balance…..to platform one man’s (constant same) opinion can surely then be ‘balanced’ by also inviting, as a guest, another man/woman’s opinion to voice their opposing argument to his……I jest of course….as if ‘balance’ was the objective of the BBC here…..Ha Ha

The pool of guests they, the BBC, invite on…… all have a common denominator….they all seem to be opposed to the SNP…..indeed many also support OTHER political parties and too the (non) Union…..not that the BBC will disclose that pertinent fact…as if….why that would then compromise their guest’s credibility…..and their’s too…(Breaking News: already their , BBC’s, credibility well and truly compromised)

Fortunately for me my SCOTTISH education has allowed to ascertain when I am being played by the BBC…..and their guests….a wee bit of research helps me to establish EXACTLY why they, as guests or ‘experts’, say what they do and too why also they are firm favourites with the BBC…..where there is always a warm welcome and a guest slot if YOU , as an ‘expert’ , are willing to vocalise #SNPBAD…..why they, as ‘experts’ may even get paid for doing so (dirty money)…..though to be honest I would never watch their, BBC, news ‘first hand’ I prefer to source what they are doing via social media…..as in via this site and others who relate the latest propaganda the BBC subject their viewers to…..all to keep everything BRITISH…..alas it has backfired as you will be hard pushed to not find, via social media, most peeps being very much more than aware of the BBC , as a news provider, being an unreliable and untrustworthy source…..now as for propaganda…well the BBC is one of the best…..I mean is GB News not surplus to requirement as a TORY friendly channel when we already had the BBC doing that job…….( though the BBC in Scotland have temporarily jumped that particular (Tory) ship in favour of ANOTHER Pro UK party , as in New New Labour the alternate Tory party , but allegedly normal service will resume , in favour of the Tories, post the next GE).

Thank God for MY Scottish education…..it is certainly serving me very well NOW.

  2. The UK “Inbound visitor statistics for Q4 2022” published in May 2023 show how well Scotland does compared to the other nations and regions of the UK.

    https://www.visitbritain.org/2022-inbound-data-0

(Scroll down to “Visits and spend by UK region”)

“Scotland set new Q4 records for both visits and spend in Q4 2022. There were 850,000 visits between October – December 2022 spending a total of £680 million (up 1% and 19% respectively on the same period of 2019). In 2022, 3.2 million inbound visits were made to Scotland – 7% fewer than in 2019. Though visit numbers were down in 2022 (compared to 2019), visitor spending set a new January – December record of £3.2 billion (up 24% on 2019).”

However anyone and everyone with a political agenda…..prefers to proclaim that education like all of our other public services in Scotland are “failing” under the SNP but funnily enough they themselves ‘fail’ to substantiate their claims with actual comparative stats with the rest of the UK…..stats that they surely would quote if what they said was actually true and factual….. as those stats could give their claims more gravitas…alas they do not chose to quote any stats…and we all know why they do not…..

So they are, in making these unsubstantiated claims, really just lazily repeating them in a parrot like fashion to utilise as a political slogan with which to attack the SNP with….as opposed to what is the actual facts, reality and truth ….not forgetting that many who constantly say (repeat) this…are the ones who (via their location…. as in many are NOT living in Scotland) no diddly squat about ANTHING related to Scottish politics but that does not stop the media in seeking their uninformed opinions…does it! (The politicians of opposing parties do it for political gain…while knowing full well their own party’s dire record on public services…it’s called hypocrisy….something they are experts in )

We who live here and thus experience these public services are very confused as our lived experiences in using many of these public services do not match with what we are being told is the reality…..why it almost feels as if we are being lied to (says I sarcastically)….

  3. I hope you realise John how good it is to read some very positive info about Scotland’s education system. MSM coverage is consistently negative with any positive news buried or omitted. We’re not perfect but doing a heck of a lot better than folk make out even without comparison to the rest of the UK and it makes me so angry when unionists talk about Scotland’s poor domestic policy performance. Thanks for brightening up my Sunday!

    1. The Scottish teacher unions are major carpers about Scottish education. If it is as bad as they claim, do their members not bear substantial responsibility.

But, when the issue of responsibility and accountability is raised the teacher unions play the indiscipline card, with ludicrous and baleful assertions about ‘feral children’, ‘blackboard jungles’ and ‘teacher assaults’.

  5. One more reason for independence. Tories have been in power, overseeing England since May 2010. Labour for longer in Wales and they don’t want to change anything the Tories have done, so allow either of them a foothold in Scotland and the low standards they have struggled to achieve in England and Wales will also be rolled out in Scotland.
Independence is our protection against corrosive ideologies.
