Top medical journal reports no fires from Scotland’s baby boxes despite ‘Scottish’ Conlabour hopes and increased breast feeding by young mothers

In May 2018, the Sun reported:

Dr Peter Blair has warned Scottish ministers the makeshift unlaminated cribs may be flammable and unsuitable for tots to sleep in – after thousands of kits loaded with freebie goodies have been dished out to mums.

But pregnant Ruth Davidson has told of her concerns.

The Tory leader said: “Some really pressing questions raised here.”

Her (?) health secretary Miles Briggs called it a “potentially dangerous oversight” which may have “serious consequences”.

And Labour MSP Mary Fee [above] said: “The Government need to ensure the boxes are safe.”

See that ‘makeshift?’ They’re some lot at the Sun, aren’t they?

Today, the Lancet, considered by some to be more trustworthy than the Sun or, for that matter, academic-on-the make, Dr Blair, does not report any baby box fires despite, a quarter of a million having been issued and suggests:

SBBS (Scotland’s Baby Box Scheme) did not affect exclusive breastfeeding at the population level but did increase exclusive breastfeeding among young mothers (aged <25 years). This effect persisted 6–8-weeks into the postnatal period and might have a beneficial impact on age-related inequalities, with young mothers exhibiting the lowest prevalence of exclusive breastfeeding.

  1. I despair of Scotland ever getting anything right. Today, for instance, STV is reporting on the shambles of the cycling event is in Glasgow, finding a taxi driver who can’t move, a hairdresser cancelling appointments cos she’s stuck in traffic, gridlocked streets and cyclists peeing in hedges and people arriving by train unable to get to the event.

    1. Might have been describing a bog standard Orange parade/March although I imagine there were no flute tooting, drum banging, drunken sash singing competitors at the cycle race.

Should a say, ferry sink in the Minch and Mum, Dad and Baby end up in the sea, will it keep the bairn dry and safe till rescued?

I await the test results from oor MSM.

  3. It perfectly examples the petty and vindictive posturing of the media and SNP opposition 5 years ago, yet what in reality has changed ?

The SG baby-box strategy (based on the Norway initiative ?) quite innocently
reached parts of the middle-east and parts of Africa to considerable joy before the wholly manufactured UK furore over it died down over pursuing the ‘how dare we help people’ gambit.
    – Davidson moved into ermine clad and directorship furnished baby-boxes, the latest of which was SRU, the ‘old boys network’.
    – Miles Briggs has moved on from that particular “potentially dangerous oversight” to pursue his own “potentially dangerous oversight” as being “elected” as List MP, but following in the footsteps of diehards as ‘there’s been a Murdo’ and ‘wha’s coo’s this ?’ DRoss…
    – Mary Fee retired, but I suspect her contribution was as far as the Scum could go in portraying ‘some’ form of ‘united opposition’ to portray SNP as the outliers in this.

    1. I think it was Finland who first started the baby boxes many, many years ago, in an attempt, a successful attempt, to improve their baby mortality rates and maternal health. In order to get the baby box pregnant mothers had to sign up for them and thus entered the pre- and post- natal care system with all that implied for improvements in mother & baby’s health. Now their maternal and newborn health stats are among the best in the world.

The Scottish Gov’s initiative in this was fortunate given we are now in a cost of living crisis with stories of mothers shoplifting baby food. Getting such a great ‘starter pack’ will certainly help with the expense of having a baby
