The Cancel Culture at Reddit in Scotland

11 days ago I wrote this to Reddit CEO Steve Huffman about, ironically, huffy moderators at r/Scotland. No reply. No acknowledgement,

I write to protest my ban today from: https://www.reddit.com/r/Scotland/The ban followed my posting of satirical/spoof/mock-ups such as these below, aimed at highlighting in a satirical way the coverage of Scottish political issues in the context of the current debate over independence. In these, I change the image and or the sub text and leave the header. I understand the particular messages below may make little sense to you and were clearly over the head of some readers, but I feel sure that you will understand and respect the long and positive history of political satire. I have posted the same images in Twitter and in Facebook over several years with no sanctions. Indeed, BBC Scotland have never complained.

The moderator’s justification was this:

Are they using the editorialising criterion? 1: to express an opinion in the form of an editorial 2: to introduce opinion into the reporting of facts3: to express an opinion (as on a controversial issue)Help me out. It was satire, a joke even, geddit? Did I violate any of the above rules?As for ‘low-quality’ and ‘not in the spirit of the sub?’ Where are they in the above rules? Can either be judged objectively? Do they ban all low-quality postings?And not being a c**nt? See the comments below after the mod’s explanation, none removed, no one banned for being a c**nt, a p***ck of a bell-**d:

Please consider rescinding this ban and offering advice to the r/Scotland moderators.

  1. Often, these ‘right on’ iconoclastic organisations when they start small with a few people are initially very open minded. However, when they start to grow and attract more advertisers, they become much more cagey about ‘giving offence’ to the directors of companies who advertise. And, these people have channels of influence – old school tie, the Guards, golf club, MCC, etc through which they make their displeasure known and the unspoken threat of withholding revenue.

    And, the ‘heroic buccaneers’ usually become less heroic and more conventional. As often as not many of them are actually from such backgrounds themselves.

    In addition, as they become larger and more staff join them they become more autocratic and opposed to workers’ rights, just as their parents are with their employees.

    I suspect this is the case with Reddit. The local managers of Reddit are probably fellow members of Barnton Golf Club with board members of BBC Scotland.

  3. Right on anonymous I agree with you.

    In my experience of Reddit it is out and out unionist it’s not the eclectic place it tries to claim , now and then it hits on a subject that needs discussion but it quickly corrals discussion into a narrow field and if your ideas and opinions don’t match the Reddit unionist view you are quickly shuffled out .

    I don’t rate it , it’s too samey week in week out

  4. Communities are run however moderators decide so it’s probably best not expending too much energy on this. Nothing you do is helping your cause as, frankly, nobody really cares.

    1. Exactly. Why’s he not just making a new account? Also don’t get being upset about being banned from that sub. It’s full of the workshy dross if society.

      Also imagine being a Reddit mod. Literally wasting your day and not getting paid a penny for it. That’s why it attracts the freaks and weirdos it does

  5. John , just think of all the poor Reddit cnuts who will have nothing to complain about because you have been cancelled .
    They will have to direct their understandable unionist bias and moronic fury at something/someone else – perhaps those ridiculous people who are trying to Save the Planet !

I guess they operate a system whereby they use skewed logic where real cnuts are acceptable or indeed welcome …..where as others not being cnutish enough or sacre bleu not cnutish at all …well they are then subjected to a ban…….seems a tad cnutish to me….from a logical perspective….to be a cnut or not to be cnut……that is the Question….but tis nobler in mind to (not be a cnut and then alas) suffer…… a BAN !
