Can we get some new documentaries without this balloon?

The BBC has now fallen out with Neil Oliver:

False claims suggesting that the BBC has been misreporting temperatures in southern Europe have been spreading on social media.

A clip of Neil Oliver, a GB News presenter, accusing the BBC “and others” of “driving fear” by using “supposedly terrifying temperatures”, has been viewed more than two million times.

Speaking about the fires on Rhodes on GB News on Monday, Mr Oliver accused the BBC, and other broadcasters, of trying to “make people terrified of the weather”.

“Those supposedly terrifying temperatures that were being predicted, all starting with a four… 40 this and 40 that… were obtained using satellite images of ground temperatures,” he said.

“That’s never been the temperature that’s used in weather reporting and forecasting.

“On the contrary, those figures are the air temperature, a couple of feet above the ground surface …the true temperatures, the air temperatures which actually happened, were in the 30s.”

Mr Oliver’s claim that the BBC was using ground temperatures is false, as several BBC weather presenters have pointed out.

Yet still available right now on BBC, these:

I’m interested in this stuff but cannot bear to watch anything with Neil Oliver.

His ballooning is not new. In 2021:

So, to add to the delights of Tom Gordon, the Herald has topped up its columnists with Baron Dunlop, architect of the poll tax and Adam Tomkins former republican leftie, now Tory.

Not satisfied, they interview the dread Neil Oliver. I know they need the readers but that headline is trashy tabloid at best. Not his first of course:

Oliver, who once described the possibility of another referendum as a ‘cancerous presence‘ is such an obvious propagandist for the right, no self-respecting newspaper should be interviewing him.

His track record is foul.

In February:

“They left their windswept crofts behind looking for adventure and the promised land”

He said that about the folk burned and driven off their land in the Highland Clearances.

In September 2020

Readers will remember Oliver’s suggestion that a second independence referendum was a cancerous presence, that FM Alex Salmond was ‘round‘ and that Professor Tom Devine looked like an old man in the Muppets.

It’s ironic that Oliver bemoans comments on his appearance when unable to come back at academic criticism he, himself, quickly falls back on personal abuse.

Most entertaining, however, in the light of his choice of ‘cancerous‘ to describe the democratic wishes of millions, and his defence of the racist TV historian David Starkey, is his assertion that he has held “very middle of the road” views all his life.

No more, something is rising in my throat.

Get this man off my screens and make new docs on Celts n stuff!

  1. Unionism seems to attract some very strange characters with completely off the wall ideas.
Never mind, once we recover our statehood,we will be able to celebrate Separatist Day or Breaking Up the Precious Union Day or Nationalist Day or some other pejorative expression cooked up by Oliver and his cronies.
Wonder why he doesn’t use these terms with regard to the USA or other countries that have parted company with the London treasury?

  2. Snap!

A few years ago now, can’t remember who said it to me, ‘och, he’s actually a very quiet person, and the hair is very much the “cute package” for the job’.

I hate the word ‘cute’ and cannot stand ‘Neil the knob’.

  5. Like the old crofters , will Neil leave ”his windswept croft” and go ”in search of adventure and the promised land ” when Scotland becomes an independent country ?
Given his views he surely couldn’t tolerate living in such a ”cancerous ” land .
