Massive, 22% increase in operations carried out, in one month, highest since pandemic yet BBC Scotland ignores it

From Public Health Scotland today:

During May 2023, there were 24,125 operations planned to take place across NHSScotland. This represents an increase of 21.6% compared to the 19,840 planned for April 2023 and is 10.2% higher than the number planned a year previously in May 2022 (21,895)….475 (2%) were cancelled by the hospital due to capacity or non-clinical reasons.

This is stunning, headline news, but it just doesn’t fit with ‘our’ MSM agenda, obsessed with ferries and laughable stories of Orkney leaving the UK.

  1. Ah, but ….. to deploy an analogous argument to the one used when the numbers of young people who pass Higher Grade examinations with grade A awards increases, the media and, shamefully, some teacher trade unions: “is this yet another example of ‘dumbing down’?”.

So, is NHS Scotland prioritising ‘easier’ operations which can be completed in shorter times and so boost the numbers of people being operated on? There will then be a vox pop of a person reporting that her/his brain surgery has been cancelled for the second time.

As with the ‘dumbing down’ allegation, after several paragraphs of innuendo, there will be a small section towards the end which will say that looking at all categories of surgery there is no evidence to indicate changes in priorities. But, how many will read beyond the headline.

The appalling Laura Kuenssberg at the weekend claimed that ‘some people love the NHS, but others hate it’. She was conflating two different things and using inaccurate terminology. A huge proportion of the population value and support the NHS, wish it to continue, but want to see more investment. However, because of staff shortages etc due to austerity and Brexit many are angry about the increasing waiting times and delays. This is not the same as disapproval of the NHS as a principle.
