‘Scotland has one of the worst ferry services in the world?’ He needs to go island-hopping in Indonesia or Bangladesh or…

In a Tory-run Holyrood committee, a few island councillors get an extended opportunity to complain about their ferry services.

The Mull and Iona councillor who, judging by his accent, chose to live there, presumably after a bit of research into what life is like on an island, tells us to look abroad for advice on how to run a ferry service because Scotland has ‘one of the worst in the world.’

Worse than Indonesia with 11 ferries sunk and thousands dead in only the last 20 years?

Philippines with 13 and, similarly, thousands dead?

Bangladesh with 18 and uncounted dead?

Greece with 2 and more than 500 dead?

Georgia with 1 and 50 dead?

Italy with 1 and nearly 100 dead?

Hungary with 1 and 27 dead?

Japan with 1 and 26 dead?

Brazil with 1 and 41 dead?

The USA with 2 with 11 dead?

Canada with 1 sunk but no loss of life?

CalMac despite up to 500 sailings a day, has not lost a ferry since 1973 and there were no deaths, not even an injury.

He also moans about weather-related cancellations in the winter. What on earth does he think they should do? Just sail regardless, with the consequent sinking and loss of life, as in the above?

Do he, his fellow middle-class settler councillors and their opposition party pals want Scotland’s mainland working-class taxpayers to further subsidise their freely-chosen and relatively privileged lives? He does.

  2. They come to Scotland because the Westminster government have created disparity allowing south of England to to pay higher wages than elsewhere to do the same job so that people there have high income to pay for higher priced houses but when these people reach 50 they move to “the country” which often means Scotland or Wales where because Westminster policies have kept Scotland and Wales unable to progress competitively in the business world property and land is cheaper enabling these 50 ish retirees to buy three or four times worth of house or land what they would get for the same money in the dump they came from .
As they do everywhere they go the English try to take over demanding English breakfasts cheap English swilling beer and that the locals change their lives to suit the English swine

  3. As with all of Scotland’s public services, cash for investment is in short supply.
Until Scotland becomes a normal country whose government has access to the resources required for adequate funding then the buck remains firmly with a UK treasury who have demanded to keep that responsibility.
All the Scottish government can do is rob Peter to pay Paul.

  4. The line towards the end of “The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance’ summarises it well: “When legend becomes fact, print the legend”. The legend is ‘Calmac bad’ and facts do not change this, because they do not get printed by the media..

  5. Worth pointing out that the decision on whether a ferry sails in bad weather is made by the Master/Captain and nobody else. Forecasts and weather patterns are closely monitored in anticipation of any cancellations being necessary but ultimately it’s the guys with four rings that make the decision. It wisnae Nicola.

  6. For South Uist “ferry outrage” read on wiki Earl Granville, landowner and family tree of political Liberals, I wonder if there is a unionist connection, illuminating!!! Also got to question if that is why the BBC have been told to report all of next week from South Uist?
