Paying millions to tell Scotland who is in charge

Alerted to this by Carol Vorderman via Andrew:

As you will have seen yesterday, it’s been revealed that cancelling the Valneva Covid vaccine contract, based on production in Livingston, in 2021, cost the taxpayer £358 million after the UK Government tried to claim breach of contract but were defeated in court: https://www.thisisoxfordshire.co.uk/news/national/23604512.axed-covid-vaccine-contract-cost-taxpayers-358m/

Yet in 2022:

The location?

Once built, the centre — which could be located anywhere from the “Golden Triangle” between London, Oxford and Cambridge in the south of England to a site in the North-East.

You know, when the FT says North-East, they don’t mean Peterhead, they mean more Peterborough.

Spending money to punish Scotland under the SNP is not new.

From the cancelled carbon capture scheme in Peterhead to the massive police raid on Nicola Sturgeon’s bedroom to the failure to tax Shell as Norway has done, throwing money at this cause is high priority.

  1. I doubt many believed a word of Javid’s justifications for cancellation of the Valneva contract at the time, my own thoughts at the time used the words “bung” and “competition” – The Scotland connection did go through my mind given the attitudes of the management in Downing Street, but thought even HE couldn’t be that arrogant and petulant, how wrong was on that one.
    Then along same Alister Jack….

At least we have another cost comparator when GMS continue their “SG – bad” double act over the cost of ferries, DRS, etc., etc..

  2. Johnson visited the company at its Livingston site in Feb ’22. On that occasion it was being used as a ‘see what the Union does for Scotland’ exercise. Then the contract was pulled in Dec ’22 after it had served its political purpose.

Just one other point. People keep talking about the CCS promised for Peterhead but seem to forget the earlier CCS project based at Longannet a project that had completed the pilot stage and was ready to move to full conversion but the plug was pulled and all 3 Unionist parties had a hand in pulling that plug.

The SNP came to power in 2007 just as the Longannet Pilot project was coming to completion. Money was available from the Labour Gov for the full conversion to CCS but Gordon Brown, by then PM, refused to release the money. Apparently he did not want to give the new SNP SG a ‘win’. Then came the 2010 GE and the Tory/LibDem Coalition. They cancelled the project completely. Chris Huhne, a LibDem, was the energy secretary in the Coalition who made the announcement.

Around about that time the Canadians completed the Boundary Dam CCS scheme which was based on a coal-fired power station just like Longannet.
