Combined Express/Tory dumb reading of Glasgow pollution figures

Ehm….

From the Express, today:

Air pollution has INCREASED in Glasgow‘s Low Emissions Zone since the rules were enforced by the council at the start of June. According to site data from the city centre, four key indicators of pollution have actually went up so far this month compared with May.

In one instance, the levels actually now exceed legal limits. The Air Quality in Scotland website records nitrogen dioxide (NO2) levels of 43.0 in June, compared with 37.1 in May, with the legal limit being 40.

Nitrogen dioxide can cause respiratory problems in humans and even chronic lung disease through prolonged exposure. Nitrogen oxide (NO), which can have the same effect, levels have also jumped up from 23.4 to 30.1.

NOo presenting as NO2 levels have jumped from 73 in May to 89.2 in June. And particulate matter – tiny particles in the air such as dirt and dust – have increased from 13.7 in May to 15 in June so far.

Scottish Conservative shadow transport minister Graham Simpson MSP said: “You couldn’t make it up. The LEZ seems to be having the opposite effect to the intended one. It beggars belief, coming on top of the revelation that many Glasgow City Council vehicles are non-compliant, this SNP-Green scheme is already a shambles.”

Teehee, they’ve went and thought they’re clever comparing the figures for the whole of May with only 13 days with data recorded in June, in Scotland from: https://www.scottishairquality.scot/latest/site-info/GLA4

So, where to begin?

Data for the period up to today, 19 June, are available and show they’ve went and had a dramatic fall in N02 to only 8.4 and 9 in the last few days, lower than those in much of May 2023: https://www.iqair.com/uk/scotland/glasgow

What other factor might have went and caused the wee ‘spike’ in early June 2023?

Wind has not went and blowed particles away and rain has not went and washed them away?

What have we went and just had? More than two weeks of high pressure, almost no wind and almost no rain.

Watch the later data roll in and see the Express/Tory pollution has went and blown away.

  1. Assuming the photo is of Graham Simpson.

While his analysis is comparable with that of Lord Foulkes being caught short on the way to the Gents, I must however admire Grahams attempt at fastening his tie. I too as a child, was often ridiculed for such neck disasters.

  2. Graham’s spell at the Sun shows, but Holyrood’s opposition has increasingly become a circus act anyway.
The latest Tory wheeze is lodging a motion of no confidence against Lorna Slater – No doubt this farce will be faithfully reported by their friendly media, but what does it actually achieve for the Scottish electorate they purportedly serve ?

It’s abundantly clear the Tories only exist to wreck progress.
