BBC Scotland’s Liverpool Lie

Fresh from sharing drugs with us via their county lines gangs, but with that ignored by BBC Reporting Scotland, we do get to hear about Liverpool sharing in other ways. First off:

Health officials are warning that units sterilising surgical equipment in Scotland’s hospitals don’t have enough capacity to deal with major breakdowns. Support from a service in Liverpool was recently needed to maintain part (!) of NHS Scotland’s sterilisation service. And NHS Lothian has warned there isn’t enough contingency in the system.

Reading the full report on their website, we see it’s only about one health board:

Last year, the majority of scheduled operations in NHS Lothian had to be postponed for nearly a week because of a leak in its Hospital Sterilisation and Decontamination Unit (HSDU).

The steriliser leak was in August 2022, yet the leak to BBC Scotland happens in April 2023. Interesting?

The earlier report, if you can be bothered to check, cast serious doubt on the notion that only Liverpool could help:

NHS Lothian chief executive Calum Campbell thanked the other health boards who have been supporting them.

NHS Lanarkshire and their Hospital Sterilisation and Decontamination Unit (HSDU) operator, Steris, are providing replacement supplies of the surgical instrument trays used in operating theatres.

And NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde has also offered the use of their HSDU facility to carry out sterilisation and decontamination of NHS Lothian’s instruments.

The actual NHS Lothian report does not mention Liverpool at all and repeats:

Support has been offered by several other Health Boards such as NHS Lanarkshire and their HSDU operator, Steris, who are providing replacement supplies of the surgical instrument trays used in operating theatres.  NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde has also offered the use of their HSDU facility to carry out sterilisation and decontamination of NHS Lothian’s instruments.

So the Liverpool story is a lie.

  1. Ehm John, perhaps if not an actual lie, a deliberate distortion – My eye was caught by the quote “Support has been offered by several other Health Boards such as NHS Lanarkshire and their HSDU operator, Steris…” – So I looked up “Steris” who have a “warehouse” in Liverpool…

      1. It was the “NHS Lanarkshire and their HSDU operator, Steris, who are providing replacement supplies of the surgical instrument trays used in operating theatres.” that gave the hint to look up where Steris were based.
Google showed a map with various locations for Steris operations, the one in Liverpool was tagged as a warehouse.

My guess would be that NHS Lothian were assisting Lanarkshire by diverting THEIR supplies from their own “HSDU operator, Steris”, who presumably used the Liverpool warehouse.

I didn’t look to see whether the map included a Steris presence in Lothian.

          1. Fair enough, as I said I hadn’t looked at anything but the Liverpool connection to Steris.
I does however back up my suspicions of HMS James Cook “inventive reporting” on matters Scotland – “Bellshill had to call in additional supplies from Liverpool” wouldn’t exactly rock the public boat.
