Cancer UK to maintain only England-based research units fully despite greater general generosity in Scotland

Cancer Research UK plans to ‘axe’ funding to its largest clinical trials unit in Scotland, leaving only its seven sites in England unaffected.

I don’t have Cancer UK donor data but in 2019:

Scots are more generous than the UK as a whole when it comes to being charitable, according to the largest study of giving behaviour in the country.

Despite the percentage of people giving to charity being on the slide, 76% of Scots reported that they had taken part in a charitable or social activity in 2018, 12 percentage points higher than the UK average of 64%.

  1. I am disappointed to read this as my wife and I have been long term donors to various cancer research charities including this one.

While we are internationalist in our charitable donations, since we want ALL humans to benefit, we also want to ensure that people in Scotland benefit. For example we do not donate to Great Ormond St Hospital, because there are effective specialist children’s hospitals in Glasgow and Edinburgh.

With regard to cancer research we have long supported the Beatson in Glasgow. Many of our friends have been treated and some, sadly, died there. Some years ago, the Beatson actually developed a multi drug ‘cure’ for a particular cancer.

It was only relatively recently that we found out that donations to RSPCA and NSPCC are deployed only in England and Wales. There are separate Scottish organisations. It is frankly wrong that these organisations should solicit donations in Scotland, when many donors like us thought they were UK wide.

  2. I expect a backlash but never have been keen to donate to Charities per se as I see it they are simply absolving Governments of their fundamental responsibilities to care for those of us in need. Instead we end up with an erratic ‘post code’ lottery and this news simply vindicates my decision for those that do to contribute only to ‘Charities’ that include Scotland.

CAN CANCER U.K. RETURN ANY AND ALL MONIES ALREADY COLLECTED FROM SCOTS ILLEGALLY IF NOT !!!!!!! SURELY THIS IS ILLEGAL MONEY COLLECTING on a non HUMANITARIAN SCAM

  4. I suspect this will happen more with other charities, so re Brexit and of course as pointed out, it’s a political move. Many charities operating in Scotland are England based, money donated in Scotland benefits them in England. We have pone local charity shops which said, ‘whats made in Scotland stays in Scotland, (chest heart and stroke), that sign was taken down a couple of years ago.

Most often what’s made in Scotland, what people donate, goes swiftly out of Scotland in fact. Buyer beware.
