As STV show us England games Scottish football is best attended in Europe!

I know, it doesn’t always look that way when you see broadcasts not involving the big Scottish clubs but the numbers tell no lies.

Why is it the best attended? I know, because BBC Scotland and STV rarely show it, preferring to give us England internationals?

  1. In the case of STV it still operates on the basis of its founder, Lord Thomson’s dictum, as a ‘licence to print money’. That is get as big a return possible from as small an investment as possible. Now, Lord Thomson’s STV actually had Arthur Montford (Morton fan) and Scotsport for decades which broadcast Scotland matches and gave us regular highlights. But in the drive to ‘maximise shareholder value’, it was chopped as too expensive. It is cheaper to buy in from the ITV pool.

BBC Scotland/Alba actually does give us live Scotland men’s team matches and has been a pretty good supporter of the Women’s team. We get a live Championship match every week, plus regular live women’s league games. There is a Premiership highlights programme at least once a week and a roundup of SWPL each week. Radio coverage is pretty substantial although the personnel, despite protestations to the contrary are significantly ‘bluenose’. (Isn’t Michael Beale a messiah???). It also has ‘Off the Ball’, which is what broadcasting ought to be more like.

I think there is scope for improvement, but, I think BBC Scotland/Alba gets a clear pass.

    STV gets a TOTAL FAIL.

  2. I’m not sure what difference this will make to the per capita figures, but I’m pretty sure that the combined population of England and Wales isn’t 71 million. Surely it’s more like 59 million?

Scotland’s per capita will still probably be larger though.

    1. It is odd that they include Wales with England. Attendances for the Welsh Premier League are roughly the same as those of the Highland League, somewhere around 350, but they are not included in the table.

Maybe they have included Wales to bolster English figures – Cardiff and Swansea both average around 17k and they play in the English Championship? Around half of the other clubs in the Championship get less than that.
