Lying about SNP Scotland’s fading drug problem in journalism addicted to clicks

From the Herald today:

A LACK of drug rehab and treatment facilities have been blamed as the number of homeless deaths nearly doubled in five years – with 60% being under the age of 45.

There’s been some fancy, if fetid, calculation going on to get that headline and distort the news when the Big Issue had this for the same data:

Drug deaths fall among Scotland’s homeless population for the first time. Drug misuse continued to play a role in more than half the deaths but fell for the first time since the National Records of Scotland started counting homeless deaths in 2017. NRS’s head of vital events Julie Ramsay said deaths related to drug misuse fell from 151 to 127 between 2020 and 2021.

The above news of falling drug deaths comes in quick succession of two other signs of improvement:

From Public Health Scotland yesterday, above, drug related hospital stays have fallen for the second year in succession and, in 2021/22 have plummeted by 17%.

From Police Scotland in June 2022, above, suspected drug deaths based on evidence from the scene fall for more than a year .

Three pieces of evidence telling a similar story; isn’t that the news?

How has the Herald made up their alternative news? The old trick of going back to when the level was lower, 2017, and just comparing that with 2022, while ignoring the most recent fall. Stinky stats.

Finally on lack of treatment facilities. See this:

  1. The good news for me is that my grand- children have never bought a newspaper in their lives, and have no intention of doing so. And of course, they will all vote Yes in the next referendum, or for an independence supporting party in the next election.

  2. There is a need for proper totally abstinence rehab fa ilities. £250million of funds over five years. Something is being done. Addiction problems cause homelessness and social problems. Local authorities put people on methadone for years and do not provide proper facilities under social care. The numbers will fall with increased funding. MUP has decreased alcohol deaths. More young people are getting help earlier.
