Many thanks to Andrew Rosie for alerting me to this.
This morning on the BBC Scotland Sunday Show, Sir Keir Starmer accused the Scottish Government of ‘total failure‘ because 1 in 7 (14.3%) of people in Scotland are on an NHS waiting list.
Neither he, nor of course, the host thought to mention that according to BBC Wales:
Waits – from referral to hospital to when a patient is treated – passed 750,000 for the first time as the latest NHS performance figures were published on Thursday, showing a 28th successive month of rising waiting lists.

The population of Wales is 3.163 million. 750 000 on waiting lists means 1 in 4.18 or 24%.
Around 50% more are on NHS Wales, than on NHS Scotland, waiting lists.
BBC host, Martin Geissler was quit combative on immigration but, of course, did not mention this.
And what is the percentage of the population of England on waiting lists?

That is indeed the question which should have been asked by any decent journalist. Then there’s Martin Guissler and HMS James Cook…

If Martin Guissler “had” asked the question in the context of the Scottish NHS doing well in comparison to Wales or other UK nations, it would have negated BBC Scotland’s constant attack line on how poor the SNP are managing the Scottish NHS.

The comparisons between Scotland and Wales, NI and especially England on any and every aspect of public services is wholly justified. Three out of four nations of the UK, even where responsibility for service delivery is ‘devolved’, are still hugely impacted by the decisions taken for England by the government in Westminster. When this is a Tory government – which it commonly is – it is a political party in government that only England voted by a majority for.
This is all well known. My point is that pointing up poor performance in Wales on certain public services gives me no pleasure. Wales also suffers from Westminster rule just like Scotland. It is IMHO only – and regrettably – necessary to point to Welsh public services in order to call out the hypocrisy of Labour in Scotland. I have little interest otherwise in criticising Mark Drakeford and his government. I just wish he would step away from his Unionism!
