They’re all, not just BBC Scotland, headlining the tragic death by knife of a 14 year-old yesterday in Glasgow.
They should. I understand but they should also inform their audience with some context so that they can react to it emotionally and behaviourally in proportion. They don’t.
How common is such a crime in Scotland? Five children have been murdered in Scotland in the last 21 years, since Kriss Donald in 2004. It is a very rare crime.
How common is knife crime? Public perceptions of carrying suggest it has fallen from 22% to 12% in the last 10 years and actual occurrences have fallen dramatically
How common is murder? Murder has fallen from 120 in 1999/2000 to 64 in 2019/2020.
For more background, see this:
Between April 2006 and April 2011, 40 children and teenagers were killed in homicides involving a knife in Scotland; between 2011 and 2016, that figure fell to just eight. The decline has been most precipitous in Glasgow, which once had one of the highest murder rates in western Europe.

I really hope they have the murderer, it should be on CCTV…terrible indeed and so incredibly sad for the boys family.
To make political capital out of a young boys death is sinking pretty low, even for the BritNat media. They will milk this for all they can, just disgraceful.
I reckon if you look at NE England news, street crime is very high. Last time I was down there and looked at their news I was shocked at how bad it is, just awful attacks on innocent people going about their business, maybe travelling home from work or the pub, terrible, some gang killings as well, it seems far too frequent in some areas of England.
Oh, just looked at their headlines today, it’s scary and depressing.
Drugs seized at S. Shields, excellent.
Presume it’s ok to share…

Perp apprehended apparently.
No matter the outlandish odds these days it will be YOUR child who is the victim of such coincident encounters every parent suffers in sympathy.
What I cannot excuse is a media looking for that tear to exploit, and those who would milk political capital from it.
Scots are better than this.
