From a more modest position, 1 point below the national average, in 2018-19, South Ayrshire’s schools have surged to the top of the table of positive destinations for school leavers.
These statistics come from the Scottish Government’s Summary Statistics for Attainment and Initial Leaver Destinations, No. 3: 2021 Edition and indicate what percentage of school leavers has job, a university or college place or some other positive destination.
This is a great achievement and to come out above affluent areas such as East Renfrewshire and East Dunbartonshire is most impressive.

A few years ago I had a conversation with a senior member of staff in an Edinburgh secondary school about ‘positive destination’ statistics.
She opened my eyes to the amount of individualised, student-directed effort that is involved for school staff to ensure a ‘positive destination’ for such high proportions of a school’s cohort every year.
Many school students may ‘sail’ through to a ‘positive destination’ but making inroads into the harder to place young people – to get to proportions of say 85% plus – is far from a trivial task at any time.
Well done to Scotland’s schools and teachers (and pupils) – again!

Of course South Ayrshire (Ayr and its leafy ‘burbs and coastal villa’s) was considered a fairly wealthy area, so a high outcome should be expected.
Much more satisfactory is the relatively high ranking of East Ayrshire, an area which has suffered a generational economic decline, but whose local authority has been one of the best.
